Multiple Markets
From Useful to Useless
Human Values and the Market
This chapter includes data concerning the diffusion of life insurance in 19th-century America as a testing ground to explore the larger theoretical problem of establishing monetary equivalences for sacred things. It discusses that cultural resistance to including certain items in the social order—namely, those related to human life, death, and emotions—into a market-type of exchange introduces structural sources of strain and ambivalence into the…
The Social Meaning of Money
A dollar is a dollar-or so most of us believe. Indeed, it is part of the ideology of our time that money is a single, impersonal instrument that impoverishes social life by reducing relations to cold, hard cash. After all, it's just money. Or is it? Distinguished social scientist and prize-winning author Viviana Zelizer argues against this conventional wisdom. She shows how people have invented their own forms of currency, earmarking money in way…
Money Talks
Money Talks
The world of money is being transformed as households and organizations face changing economies, and new currencies and payment systems like Bitcoin and Apple Pay gain ground. What is money, and how do we make sense of it? Money Talks is the first book to offer a wide range of alternative and unexpected explanations of how social relations, emotions, moral concerns, and institutions shape how we create, mark, and use money. This collection brings…

Morals and Markets
In "Morals and Markets: The Development of Life Insurance in the United States," Viviana Zelizer explores the historical transformation of life insurance from a taboo practice associated with gambling and speculation to a widely accepted and morally sanctioned financial product. Zelizer challenges the conventional narrative of market triumphalism by demonstrating how cultural and moral values shaped the development of this market. She argues that…

How I Became a Relational Economic Sociologist and What Does That Mean
My paper proposes the concept of relational work to explain economic activity. In all economic action, I argue, people engage in the process of differentiating meaningful social relations. For each distinct category of social relations, people erect a boundary, mark the boundary by means of names and practices, establish a set of distinctive understandings that operate within that boundary, designate certain sorts of economic transactions as appr…
A economia do care
Economic Lives
Over the past three decades, economic sociology has been revealing how culture shapes economic life even while economic facts affect social relationships. This work has transformed the field into a flourishing and increasingly influential discipline. This book shows how shared cultural understandings and interpersonal relations shape everyday economic activities. Far from being simple responses to narrow individual incentives and preferences, eco…

Human Values and the Market
Qualitative analysis of historical data concerning the diffusion of life insurance in the United States during the 19th century helps to explore the problem of establishing monetary equivalents for those aspects of the social order, such as death, that are culturally defi ned as above fi nancial relationships. The fi nancial evaluation of a man’s life introduced by the life insurance industry was initially rejected by many as a profanation which …
Dualidades perigosas

Pasts and Futures of Economic Sociology
Over the past few decades, economic sociology has moved from tight symbiosis with mainstream economics toward the construction of alternative explanations for economic activities. That move has allied economic sociologists increasingly with both innovative work inside economics and new analytic enterprises outside. Cumulatively, these developments have created a much more social interpretation of money and markets

The Social Meaning of Money
Classic interpretations of the development of the modern world portray money as a key instrument in the rationalization of social life. Money is reductively defined as the ultimate objectifier, homogenizing all qualitative distrinctions into an abstract quantity. This paper shows the limits of such a purely utilitarian conception of "market money." A model of "special monies" is proposed to examine the extraeconomic, social basis of modern money.…

The Purchase of Intimacy
Students of the intersection between monetary transfers and intimate social relations face a choice among three ways of analyzing that relationship: as hostile worlds whose contact contaminates one or the other; as nothing but market transactions, cultural constructions, or coercion; or as differentiated ties, each marked by a distinctive set of monetary transfers. A review of payment practices, legal disputes, and recent legal theory illustrates…

Payments and social ties
Monetary payments fall into three categories: gift, entitlement, and compensation. Each one corresponds to a significantly different set of social relations and systems of meanings. People making payments use a number of earmarking techniques to distinguish those categories of social relations and meanings from each other, impose substantial controls over the proper uses of money received within each category, and attach great importance to the d…
Kids and Commerce
Analysts have frequently neglected children's economic activities as peripheral and/or morally threatening, but recent work has challenged both characterizations. Direct observation of children's participation in production, distribution and consumption reveals their extensive and consequential involvement in the economy. The organization, meaning and consequences of children's economic activity vary significantly among three different sets of so…

Fine tuning the Zelizer view
Fine and Lapavitsas accept my critique of neoclassical economics as well as my empirical findings, but too hastily reject the arguments underlyng both of them. Despite their complaints to the contrary, my work provides viable definitions of money and markets, offers a theoretically motivated research program, demonstrates the heterogeneity of money and markets, deals with standard economic processes, and addresses general theoretical issues. With…
Repenser le marché
Rethinking the market This article seeks to question the purely economic model of the market and to replace it with a new model of "multiple markets" emphasizing the interdependence between the economic sphere and socio-cultural factors. It aims to illustrate this thesis by showing how the "exchange" price of adopted children has varied in response to changes in their economic and affective roles. Whereas in the 19th century the value of a child …

The Price and Value of Children
Qualitative analysis of historical data on the development of children's insurance in the United States between 1875 and the early decades of the 20th century explores the complex relationship between the human and the market values of children, specifically the emergence of the economically "worthless" but emotionally "priceless" child. This paper focuses on the legislative struggle between child insurers and child savers who opposed the insurin…

Missing monies
By distinguishing monies of account from monetary media, then classifying variants of the two, Nigel Dodd makes a general contribution to monetary analysis as well as clarifying the location of the euro within the range of contemporary monies. So doing, he rejects common distinctions between genuine money – legal tender backed by national authorities – and other lesser forms of currency. His account suffers, however, from slighting the social rel…

Morals and Markets. the Development of Life Insurance in the United States
The complex relations between money, human life, and death form the central themes of Morals and Markets. The process of monetarizing life remains a perplexing phenomenon. With lively detail Zelizer chronicles the fascinating development in the second half of the nineteenth century of the life insurance industry in the United States--one of the most unusual tales in the history of American business. This book portrays the controversial origins of…
