Getting boxed in
Restrictive housing imposes isolation in austere conditions on people who commit serious rule violations or are too dangerous (or endangered) to house in the general prison population. We contribute to a growing body of scholarship analyzing restrictive housing placements, asking how gang membership, race/ethnicity, and misconduct interact to predict placement and lengths of stay. We integrate analysis of qualitative interviews with a random samp…
Unexceptional Patterns of Solitary Confinement
Combining analysis of 186 longitudinal interviews with robust administrative data, we document how people in prison in Washington state experience solitary confinement not once over one long period, but repeatedly over an average of 6.3 shorter ‘spells’ during their incarceration, followed by periods of adjustment as people re-enter the less restrictive general prison population. We identify three categories of shocks people experience across rep…

Deconstructing the Power Dynamics of Prison Research
This article examines methodological dilemmas surrounding entrée, emotion, and epistemology that can arise when conducting qualitative research in carceral settings. We address how our research team navigated consent and presentations of self for maintaining access; how they managed empathy and the emotional toll of conducting research in adversarial settings; and how conflicting narratives raised questions about data validity and knowledge const…
Undocumented consciousness
This paper examines the impact of immigration law on US citizens' understanding of legal status categories. Prior research on legal consciousness has uncovered the ways in which undocumented persons make sense of and navigate their legal position in society. Less is known, however, about the paradox of US citizen children who are legally protected by their citizenship yet grow up in the context of their parents' precarious immigration statuses. D…
Well-Being, Changes to Academic Behavior, and Resilience Among Families Experiencing Parental Immigration Imprisonment
While the deleterious impacts of parental incarceration are well documented, we know less about the experiences of children with parents imprisoned by immigration authorities. We draw from 62 multigenerational and multiperspective interviews conducted in California with school-age children experiencing parental immigration imprisonment (PII), and their nondetained caregivers. We find that children experiencing PII report feelings and behaviors su…
Who has the power? Manipulating and reclaiming social support in solitary confinement
Social support is often cited as among the most important factors in successful adjustment to prison, reentry, and overall desistance. Yet, few studies have sought to explore the impact of familial social support on incarcerated persons’ experiences in solitary confinement. Analyzing the narratives of men housed in isolation units in one Northwestern state, the present study identifies the variety of experiences they have with social support duri…
The Educational Consequences of Parental Immigration Detention
Every year, Immigration and Customs Enforcement imprisons hundreds of thousands of noncitizens as they await adjudication on their deportation proceedings. Importantly, many detained individuals have lived in the interior of the country for many years and are parents of young, dependent, school-age children living in the United States. This analysis brings together and builds upon research on parental incarceration and international migration. We…
Compounded Vulnerability
While an extensive body of literature has analyzed the spillover and intergenerational consequences of mass incarceration, fewer studies explore the consequences of a parallel system: mass immigration detention. Every year, Immigration and Customs Enforcement imprisons hundreds of thousands of noncitizens as they await adjudication on their deportation proceedings, sometimes for months or years at a time. Many detained individuals have lived in t…
Early Identity, Environment, and Experience
Josefina Fierro de Bright served as a political and social activist in the 1930s and 1940s through her participation in the Mexican Defense Committee, El Congreso (the National Congress of Spanish-Speaking Peoples), and the Sleepy Lagoon Defense Committee, as well as her important efforts to end the violent attacks on ethnic Mexicans in Los Angeles during the Zoot Suit Riots. Fierro participated in organizations focused on human, civil, women’s, …
Psychological Distress in Solitary Confinement
Objectives. To specify symptoms and measure prevalence of psychological distress among incarcerated people in long-term solitary confinement. Methods. We gathered data via semistructured, in-depth interviews; Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) assessments; and systematic reviews of medical and disciplinary files for 106 randomly selected people in solitary confinement in the Washington State Department of Corrections in 2017. We performed 1-ye…
Masons, Magonistas, and Maternalists
This chapter illustrates how, despite the differences in political approach among the gente decente reformers, the greater contrast was between these liberals and the Magonistas who took liberal reform to the radical extreme of anarcho-syndicalism. Flores Magón and his Magonismo followers denounced abuses on both sides of the border long before others did, and their analysis of what was wrong was more far-reaching than the liberals’. However, whi…
Redeeming La Raza
This book examines the gendered and class-conscious political activism of Mexican-origin people in Texas from 1900 to 1950. In particular, it questions the inter-generational agency of Mexicans and Mexican Americans who subscribed to particular race-ethnic, class, and gender ideologies as they encountered barriers and obstacles in a society that often treated Mexicans as a nonwhite minority. Middle-class transborder activists sought to redeem the…

In this article we deal with some of the approximations undertaken as part of the research studies developed within the framework of our doctoral training. Said studies attempt to delve into the reconstruction of memories of the militancy of the Juventud Peronista in the city of Bahía Blanca between 1966 and 1976, taking into account the strong presence of the Armed Forces in said city. In this reconstruction, the native conceptions about politic…

When archaeologists speak about protection, conservation and revaluation about the historical and cultural heritage we usually talk about those guidelines and regulations we are authorized to recommend as a select group. What happens to those ideas, concepts and meaning that the actors and academic or scientists communities have about their own historical, archaeological cultural heritage? The Political Science Discipline in Argentina
It is very difficult to date the birth of political science in Argentina. Unlike other discipline of the social sciences, in Argentina the first distinction can be made between political thought on the one hand, and political science in another. The debate over political thought—as the reflection of different political questions—emerged in our country in the nineteenth century, especially during the process of constructing the Argentine nation-st…
