  • Transforming Health Psychology and Behavioral Medicine to Address the Climate Crisis

    Open Access•Elissa S Epel, Kristi E White et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Behavioral Medicine•2025•Referencias: 83

OBJECTIVE: The climate crisis poses the largest threat to human health and survival and has been a public health emergency for many years. It is causing harmful consequences for physical and mental health and is amplifying existing health inequities. In this call to action, we highlight the relevance of the health psychology and behavioral medicine communities in addressing the health impacts of climate change. METHOD: We identify mitigation and …

  • Realism and Political Liberalism in Normative Political Theory

    Open Access•Judith Rodin•ARTICLE•Politička misao•2025

This paper casts light on the dialogue between political realism and John Rawls’s political liberalism. I describe political realism on the basis of contemporary realist currents that attempt to render politics an autonomous sphere of human activity, largely through an investigation of sources of normativity apt for guiding political action. I elaborate on what points realists suggest they conflict with political liberalism, and identify three fo…

  • A Longitudinal Study of Change in Domain-Specific Self-Efficacy among Older Adults

    GAIL MCAVAY, G J McAvay et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•1996•Citada por: 10•Referencias: 5

Predictors of change in domain-specific self-efficacy were examined in a sample of community-residing men and women aged 62 and older. Self-efficacy perceptions were assessed for eight domains of living: productivity, health, transportation, family relationships, relationships with friends, finances, safety, and living arrangements. Using pooled logistic regression models, both baseline and time-varying predictors of decline and improvement in se…

    Open Access•Ruth H Striegel-Moore, Ruth H Striegel‐Moore et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology of Women Quarterly•1996•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 3

Using a prospective design, this study examined somatic and emotional symptoms of planned pregnancy in a sample of 162 healthy women. All women participated in a baseline (prepregnancy) interview. Seventy women became pregnant and were assessed at each trimester; the 92 nonpregnant controls were interviewed 3, 6, and 9 months after their baseline interview. All participants also completed the Anxiety and Depression subscales of the Symptom Checkl…

  • Self-Efficacy and Cognitive Performance in High-Functioning Older Individuals

Open Access•Teresa Seeman, Teresa E Seeman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Aging and Health•1993•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 7

The hypothesis that stronger self-efficacy beliefs are associated with better cognitive performance at older ages was examined in a sample of men and women, age 70-79. Multiple domains of efficacy beliefs and cognitive abilities were examined. Analyses revealed considerable specificity in the observed associations. For men, multiple regression analyses revealed that instrumental efficacy beliefs were related to better performance on tests of memo…

  • Effects of pure sugar vs. mixed starch fructose loads on food intake

    Open Access•Judith Rodin•ARTICLE•Appetite•1991•Citada por: 12•Referencias: 18

Using a within-subject design, we gave subjects three different 520-530 kcal preloads in the form of puddings in a randomized fashion at weekly intervals. The puddings contained either 50 g of fructose or glucose as the sole carbohydrate source in a protein and fat mixture, or 50 g fructose plus 15 g of starch. Food intake was assessed 2.25 h after the preload was completed. Blood was drawn throughout and assayed for concentrations of glucose and…

  • Food cravings in relation to body mass index, restraint and estradiol levels

Open Access•Judith Rodin, Joan Mancuso et al.•ARTICLE•Appetite•1991•Citada por: 34•Referencias: 15

The study considered the nature and extent of cravings in 108 healthy women between the ages of 20 and 37 who were tested at four time points over a 2-year period. There was substantial consistency over the four widely separated time points (3 months-1 year) in the types of foods craved, with chocolate and ice cream highest on the list, followed by fatty and spicy foods, and sweets. Women with a higher body mass index reported more consistent cra…

The study examined influences on body satisfaction, disordered eating, and exercise behavior of a male subculture that places a heightened emphasis on appearance: the homosexual male subculture. Subjects were 71 homosexual and 71 heterosexual men. Relative to heterosexual men, homosexual men showed more body dissatisfaction and considered appearance more central to their sense of self. Also, their exercise was more motivated by a desire to improv…

  • Sense of Control

    Open Access•Judith Rodin•ARTICLE•The Annals of the American…•1989•Citada por: 12•Referencias: 39

A substantial amount of research has demonstrated that the sense of control is associated with numerous positive outcomes, including good health. Many aspects of the personal and social conditions of old age influence the control-health relationship. Environmental events associated with old age often place limits on the range of outcomes that are attainable by older people. Moreover, the association between control and indicators of health status…

  • Metabolism and endocrine secretion in response to a test meal in normal-weight bulimic women

Harvey P Weingarten, Rosa Hendler et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1988

This study assessed metabolism and endocrine secretion in normal-weight bulimic women by monitoring several digestion-related measures in the fasting state and in response to two test meals that were isocaloric but varied in degree of forbiddenness. No consistent physiological disturbances were apparent in bulimics. Their fasting electrolytes, plasma glucose, insulin, and free fatty acids were normal. Furthermore, while the two test meals resulte…

  • Psychologic and physiologic reactivity to stressors in eating disordered individuals

    L Cattanach, R Malley et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•1988

The present study explored a potential mechanism for the relationship between stressors and binge eating: specifically, whether subjects with behaviors and attitudes reflecting disordered eating show distinctive psychologic or physiologic reactivity to stressors. Female undergraduates participated in a laboratory study involving four psychologically stressful tasks. Blood pressure and pulse rate were monitored, and several psychologic questionnai…

To extend this hypothesis, the effects of manipulations of salient external cues on incidental learning and compliance were tested for overweight and normal subjects. High- or low-potency trigrams were presented incidentally, under conditions of high, low, or no distraction. A significant triple-order interaction for subject weight, cue potency, and distraction was obtain…

In the first study, no time-relevant cues were provided, and overweight subjects were inaccurate in their temporal judgments and showed significantly higher group variability than did normals.…

    Open Access•Jeffrey Wack, Judith Rodin•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Issues•1978•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 9

Current federal legislation has established nursing homes as part of the medical health‐care system rather than as community‐based institutions. The associated regulations allocate resources and provide services in a manner that emphasizes meeting the medical requirements of the individual, often at the expense of his social and psychological needs. Further, the quality of life that can be provided in nursing homes receiving public funds has been…

Thirty male and 30 female undergraduates, divided equally among individuals with obsessive-compulsive, depressive, and normal personality styles, were given different levels of information about how to exercise control in an effective manner.
