  • Indigenous Peoples, Civil Society, and the Neo-liberal State in Latin America

Michiel Baud, Marta Elena Casaús Arzú et al.•BOOK•Indigenous Peoples, Civil…•2022•Citada por: 1

In recent years the concept and study of "civil society" has received a lot of attention from political scientists, economists, and sociologists, but less so from anthropologists. A ground-breaking ethnographic approach to civil society as it is formed in indigenous communities in Latin America, this volume explores the multiple potentialities of civil society's growth and critically assesses the potential for sustained change. Much recent litera…

  • Corporations

    Open Access•Suzana Sawyer•OTHER•The International Encyclopedia of…•2018

At the dawn of the twenty‐first century, the corporation appears as one of the more stable, enduring, ubiquitous, and influential institutions of modern life. This entry provides a genealogy of the corporation and a suggestive guide for considering corporate power as a problematic. Rather than the inexorable product of a capitalist logic or fated quintessence of liberal democracy, the modern corporation, as discussed here, has a singular relation…

    Open Access•Suzana Sawyer•ARTICLE•American Ethnologist•2012•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 8

Hannah Appel's notion of “modularity” in her analysis of contemporary transnational oil operations exquisitely captures the work required to create the illusion that petroleum production is removed from and uncompromised by local entanglements. Her study belies the notion (peddled by the industry) that the extraction of crude oil is a technoscientific wonder detached from disruptive inequalities and tumultuous political conditions that too freque…

In the midst of big-oil record profits and growing debate on global warming, the Chevron Corporation launched its “Human Energy” public relations campaign. In television commercials and print advertisements, Chevron portrays itself as a compassionate entity striving to solve the planet’s energy crisis. Yet, the first term in this corporate oxymoron misleadingly reframes the significance of the second, suggesting that the corporation has a renewed…

  • Empire/Multitude—State/Civil Society

    Open Access•Suzana Sawyer•ARTICLE•Social Analysis•2007

This article uses a lawsuit against Chevron as a means to examine the complex, compromised, and incomplete practices that form what can be described as Empire/Multitude and state/civil society. The class-action suit, filed on behalf of 30,000 Ecuadorian citizens, encapsulates processes of globalization and their attendant consequences. I argue that the binaries Empire/Multitude and state/civil society assume a physiology of coherence and topograp…

  • Disabling Corporate Sovereignty in a Transnational Lawsuit

    Open Access•Suzana Sawyer•ARTICLE•PoLAR Political and Legal…•2006•Citada por: 24•Referencias: 9

This article examines the opening proceedings of a lawsuit against Chevron-Texaco filed on behalf of 30,000 Ecuadorians for industrial contamination in the country's Amazonian region. It asks what are the legal and ethical regimes at play in defining (and denying) corporate sovereignty and impunity, corporate entanglements and accountabilities. Sawyer argues that while the notion of the corporation as a sovereign embodied entity ("natural person"…

  • In Search of the Rain Forest

Arturo Escobar, Dianne Rocheleau et al.•BOOK•In Search of the Rain Forest•2003•Citada por: 6

The essays collected here offer important new reflections on the multiple images of and rhetoric surrounding the rain forest. The slogan “Save the Rain Forest!”—emblazoned on glossy posters of tall trees wreathed in vines and studded with monkeys and parrots—promotes the popular image of a marvelously wild and vulnerable rain forest. Although representations like these have fueled laudable rescue efforts, in many ways they have done more harm tha…

  • Fictions of Sovereignly

    Open Access•Suzana Sawyer•ARTICLE•Journal of Latin American…•2001

This article explores how rights and accountability are produced and erased under neoliberal regimes. It examines a class‐action law suit against Texaco Inc. filed in the U.S. on behalf of 30,000 campesinos and indígenas from the Ecuadorian Amazon. The $1.5 billion lawsuit alleged that over 25 years of environmental contamination from Texaco operations exposed local inhabitants to lethal toxins. By probing the connections between what the author …

province in the central Ecuadorian Amazon gathered in Puyo, the provincial capital, to embark on what would become one of the most effective mobili-zations of lowland Indians in recent Latin American history. Adorned with facial paint and feathers, carrying spears and children, often ill-prepared for the vagaries of lowland-highland climate change, Quichua, Achuar, and Shiwiar peacefully marched to Quito, Ecuador’s capital, some 240 kilometers aw…
