With one exception (no. 36) these terracottas all come from excavations in the neighbourhood of the Royal Road conducted between 1957 and 1961. They are a mixed lot, and the stratigraphy, although carefully observed, is seldom very helpful. They range from the Geometric to the Roman period. Apart from a few correspondences with pieces from the Demeter Sanctuary on Gypsades at Knossos, these figurines find few parallels in Crete or elsewhere, and …

  • Early Greek Jewellery

    Open Access•Reynold Higgins, R A Higgins•ARTICLE•The Annual of the British School…•1969•Referencias: 2

For a number of reasons the time seems ripe for a fresh appraisal of the jewellery of the Early Iron Age in Greece, between 1100 and 700 B.C. It is perhaps worth recalling, as a preliminary, the superlative excellence of Mycenaean jewellery, in which the arts of filigree, granulation, inlay, enamelling, and repoussé-work were carried to perfection. When the Mycenaean world finally collapsed about 1100 B.C. after a century of turmoil, it left a ve…

  • The Façade of the Treasury of Atreus at Mycenae

Open Access•S E Ellis, Samantha Ellis et al.•ARTICLE•The Annual of the British School…•1968

A53 ( red ) from Mycenae is identical with two of the Kyprianon samples (Ky 3 and 4) and differs from two others (Ky 6 and 7) only in the composition of one accessory mineral, viz. the feldspar. These are all typical rosso antico marbles. A51 ( grey-green ) is not exactly matched either in texture or by accessory minerals with any single sample from Kyprianon, but all its accessories, and approximations to its structural characters, are found amo…

  • Minoan and Mycenaean Art

    A G Mckay, Reynold Higgins•ARTICLE•The Classical World•1968

This survey describes and illustrates in detail all the significant works of art and architecture of ancient Crete and Mycenae and of the Cycladic Islands. An important event in the history of archaeology was the discovery by Heinrich Schliemann in 1876, of the treasures in the citadel of Mycenae - the home of the legendary King Agamemnon. The excavations of Sir Arthur Evans in 1900, at the palace of King Minos of Knossos was equally important ar…

  • The Aegina Treasure Reconsidered

    Open Access•Reynold Higgins, R A Higgins•ARTICLE•The Annual of the British School…•1957

The Aegina Gold Treasure in the British Museum has always been something of a mystery, because no other ancient jewellery has been found sufficiently like it to give any indication of its date or its fabric. At the time of its first appearance it was generally regarded as Late Mycenaean (i.e. L.H. III). More recently there has been a tendency to put it in the seventh century B.G., and one scholar even sees it as Phoenician. The Greek archaeologis…
