Khirbat Din‘ila, Western Galilee
The excavations at Khirbat Din‘ila revealed four occupation stages at the site, during the Roman, Byzantine, Crusader and Mamluk periods. During the Roman period, a square enclosure and an oil press (Oil Press C) of the beam-press type operated at the site. The Sanctuary at Mizpe Yammim
In 1986, four exceptional bronze votive objects were found within a tumble of rocks on the top of Mount Mizpe Yammim, in the Upper Galilee of Israel. The article suggests that certain regional differences between ancient installations that served similar purposes can be explained as being the result of two distinct types of transfer: complete and conceptual. In complete transfer, newly-introduced installations are identical or almost identical to those of the place from which they were derived. Grooved Upper Grinding Stones of Saddle Querns in Israel
Grooved upper grinding stones of saddle mills are rare in the southern Levant. The grooves are either hand-grips or are meant to hold a rod used to move the stone back and forth. Two stones with grooves from Tel Tannim are very similar to one from Tell Qasile dated to the Iron Age and to those from Tell Halaf in Mesopotamia where they are the main type, suggesting that this type originated in the north. The Olynthus Mill, Its Origin, and Diffusion
The article reviews previous research and present knowledge of the Olynthus mill and attempts to portray its history. The geographical distribution of the device and the regional diversity of subtypes are emphasized. The device varies in shape of hopper and upper stone, method of attachment of lever to upper stone, and in striation patterns. The Miṣpe Yamim Bronzes
Four bronze artifacts were found at Miṣpe Yamim, a sacred site on a mountain peak in the Upper Galilee. The find spot was close to a temple that was built in the Persian period and continued as an open air sanctuary in the Hellenistic period. Five oil presses from the Roman and Byzantine periods excavated in western Galilee are described and related to data from an archaeological survey of the region. Mapping the distribution areas of the various types of press components makes it possible to define the types of presses characteristic of the region.
