Building 7050 at the Acropolis of Late Bronze Hazor
Building 7050, located at the centre of the acropolis of Hazor, was constructed in the mid-14th century BCE and, like the rest of the city, was ravaged by fire sometime in the middle of the 13th century. Was this building a temple, as suggested by some, or a ceremonial palace, as advocated by the author? The plan of Building 7050 is clearly different from that of contemporaneous temples in the region and very similar to that of Niqmepah’s palace …
Shepherd Kings? A Zooarchaeological Investigation of Elite Precincts in Middle Bronze Age Tel Hazor and Tel Kabri
A zooarchaeological investigation of elite precincts from two major Middle Bronze Age sites in the Galilee region of northern Israel, Tel Hazor and Tel Kabri, was conducted with the aim of revealing differences in the animal economy between them. The results indicate that the elites of the polity of Hazor were strict consumers who exerted economic demands on the surrounding hinterlands and relied on specialized sheep herding. In Tel Kabri, by con…

A Decorated Jewellery Box from Hazor
An almost complete box decorated with engraved bone plaques was found in the destruction debris of the Canaanite ceremonial palace at Hazor. Twenty-two additional, similarly engraved bone plaques were found scattered in the building and its immediate surroundings. Among the box plaques and scattered plaques alike, the head of the Egyptian goddess Hathor is the most common motif. A study of the iconography shows that similar artistic portrayals ar…
Hazor at the End of the Late Bronze Age
The interpretation of the Late Bronze Age strata of Hazor is of crucial importance for understanding the sequence of events leading to the final destruction of this mighty Cannaanite kingdom. In this article we take issue with a new interpretation of the Late Bronze Age Hazor data published recently by I. Finkelstein, and suggest that this interpretaion does not tally either with the data as uncovered and presented by Yadin following his excavati…

Hazor and the Chronology of Northern Israel
This article deals with Israel Finkelstein's proposal to adopt a low chronology for the Iron Age in Israel and is, in particular, a response to his most recent article on that issue. His factual points, especially with regard to the close resemblance between the layout of the Jezreel enclosure and tenth-century B. C. E. Hazor, are shown to be inaccurate. The stratigraphic sequence of Iron Age Hazor is compared with that of other contemporary site…
Early Bronze Age Cylinder Seal Impressions and a Stamp Seal from Tel Qashish
Twenty cylinder seal impressions and one stamp seal, all dating to the Early Bronze Age, have been uncovered at Tel Qashish. This is a significant number for such a small site. Four of these impressions, as well as the stamp seal, are clearly dated to EB I, while all of the other seal impressions date to EB III. To the first group belongs an impression depicting an animal file in a tête bêche arrangement. Two almost identical cylinder seal impres…
New Light on the Relations between Egypt and Southern Palestine during the Early Bronze Age
There are many problems connected with Egyptian-Palestinian relations during the Early Bronze Age. The most significant advance toward resolving those problems is in the nature of the Egyptian involvement in Palestine in EB I. A petrographic analysis of Egyptian ceramic material from sites in southern Palestine indicates the existence of three clearly defined groups: local Canaanite ware, imported Egyptian ware, and locally-made "Egyptian" ware. …

The Relations between Egypt and the Land of Canaan during the Third Millennium B.C
Archaeological investigation in Israel and the Sinai during the last decade has produced new data relevant to the problem of relations between Egypt and Canaan during the third millennium B.C. It is therefore an appropriate time to sum up the available evidence on the very existence of such relations, and to assess its significance for the determination of the nature of those relations. This is not the place to enumerate all the findings which ha…
