Bearing the Heavy Weight”
This article examines how young people in Spain perceive and navigate the transition to adulthood, drawing on qualitative data from 30 in-depth interviews with individuals aged 18 to 32. The study uses a phenomenological approach to examine how Spanish youth define adulthood and identify role models, considering the interplay between individualization and individualism. This article examines the impact of social capital on philanthropy. Based on extensive information on individuals’ embeddedness in various dimensions of social capital gathered in the Social Capital Community Benchmark Survey, two measures of social capital are extracted from the data via factor analysis. Racial Differences in Civic Participation and Charitable Giving
In this paper we use human capital theory to follow the links from educational attainment to civic engagement, and to other pro-social behaviors such as charitable giving and volunteering, and in so doing we offer a cautionary explanation for observed racial differences in civic participation, giving, and volunteering. Wage and Nonwage Discrimination in Professional Basketball
Recent research suggests there is substantial wage discrimination against blacks in professional basketball, and that fans are the source of this discrimination. The use of multiple regression analysis does indicate a salary shortfall for black players of fourteen to sixteen percent compared with salaries of white players with comparable on-court performance. A close look at the demography of Afghanistan
The first survey designed to allow estimates of the demographic characteristics of Afghanistan’s sedentary population was conducted during the period 1972–1974. Our analysis of these data, based on recently developed techniques for handling incomplete or inaccurate data, suggests that this population lives under conditions that are extreme when judged by modern standards. Marriage is early, especially for females, and universal. Marital fertility…
