Peer support service activity prevalence by setting
Introduction Peer recovery support services (PRSS) are flexible, evidence-informed interventions that can be provided in a variety of settings and are delivered by credentialed people with lived-experience of mental health and substance use disorders. PRSS are a promising intervention that may increase linkage to care, treatment retention, and long-term recovery; however, there remains a sizable gap in the literature to disseminate these services…
Heterogeneity in Longitudinal Healthcare Utilisation by Older Adults
Older adults exhibit temporal changes in healthcare utilisation which may reflect changes in healthcare need and disease progression. Further research is required to identify the factors which influence movement between healthcare utilisation patterns

Save Our State
On 2 November 2010, the voters of Oklahoma passed the so-called “Save Our State Amendment.” This amendment to Oklahoma's constitution prohibited Oklahoma courts from “look[ing] to the legal precepts of other nations or cultures. Specifically,” it asserted, “the courts shall not consider international law or Sharia Law.” This legislative moment in middle America passed quickly. Commentators both inside and outside the United States responded to th…
Empire, Architecture, and the City
Zeynep Çelik’s Empire, Architecture, and the City is both a study of modern imperial building projects and a call to re-think many of the assumptions that underlie current scholarship on nineteenth-century empire. By comparing Ottoman and French policy, Çelik demonstrates that older, territorial empires rested as much on the political mobilization of architectural forms as newer, colonial empires did. Her focus on provinces rather than on imperia…
The Early Modern Ottomans
Ottoman historians are sometimes criticized for paying excessive attention to minute archival detail and thus losing sight of argument or analysis. This criticism does not apply to the contributors to The Early Modern Ottomans: Remapping the Empire. As the subtitle of the volume suggests, Aksan and Goffman have chosen a refreshingly broad question as their starting point, namely, how early modern Ottomans ‘mapped’ and ‘remapped’ their empire—how …
Politicizing Reproduction in Comparative Perspective
In this essay I discuss modern abortion legislation in the Ottoman Empire, Turkey, and France. Using late nineteenth and early twentieth century fears of population decline and "race suicide" as a starting point, the first half of the essay examines the relationship between nationalist or authoritarian state formation and the criminalization of abortion in all three states. The second half of the paper discusses the gradual de-criminalization of …

From Babbling to Speech
Controversy exists over whether there is any connection between children's babbling and the development of the adult sound system. The classic proponent of the discontinuity school is Jakobson 1941/1968, who claimed that the pairing of sound and meaning drastically alters the child's sound system. Jakobson's arguments for discontinuity are here evaluated on the basis of data on the transition from babbling to speech in a single set of children re…
Emily Dickinson's Beloved, a Surmise
How children talk about what happened
This study investigates the development of past tense expressions in the speech of children from 1; 6 to 2; 6. It is shown that this development depends crucially on the child's cognitive construction of the time dimension, as described by Piaget (1954, 1971). In this process two different cognitive routes are followed, depending on the type of event the child has to encode. Past events resulting in the end state of some object are gradually gras…
Andrew Thomson, O.B.E. (1893-1974)
The many friends and colleagues of Dr. Thomson, former Director of the Canadian Meteorological Service and a Fellow of the Arctic Institute since 1954, will be saddened to hear of his death on 17 October 1974 in Toronto. He was 81. Andrew Thomson was born near Owen Sound, Ontario, on 18 May 1893. He graduated from the University of Toronto in 1915 in Honours Physics, and later earned a Master's degree from the same institution. In 1958, he was aw…
