  • Modernism, Economics and the Ancient Economy

    Scott Meikle•CHAPTER•Ancient Economy•2002

  • Quality and Quantity in Economics

    Scott Meikle•ARTICLE•New Literary History•2000•Citada por: 1

There is a feeling today, more or less vague but nonetheless real, that accountants, economists, and others who deal mainly with money, inhabit a different world from everyone else. 1 This "economic world" maps roughly onto the ordinary world of things, people, and the activities of life, but it comes subtly adrift at important points in ways that produce bafflement. Economists often insist that they live in the "real world," with the heavy impli…

  • Modernism, economics, and the ancient economy

    Open Access•Scott Meikle•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Cambridge…•1996•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 8

Modernism, as a phenomenon in the study of the ancient world, has shown miraculous powers of recuperation from repeated and apparently fatal blows, and the appearance in 1992 of Edward Cohen's book Athenian economy and society: a banking perspective is a reminder of the fact. Modernism's apparent capacity to postpone terminal decline obviously has something to do with the subject of economics, but the connections are unclear. It might be imagined…

  • Aristotle on Business

    Open Access•Scott Meikle•ARTICLE•The Classical Quarterly•1996•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 2

Aristotle's treatment of trade in the Politics book one is usually regarded as especially hostile, and this is put down to snobbery and political prejudice on his part. The Greeks often regarded trade as a degrading thing for a free man to engage in, and it would be surprising if Aristotle's view of trade were entirely unconnected with this Greek sensibility. But there should be something more definite than a loose general affinity if a charge of…

  • Aristotle’s Economic Thought

    Scott Meikle•BOOK•Aristotle's economic thought•1995

Aristotle’s thought about economic matters has been a seminal influence. It was the backbone of medieval thinking about commerce, and the basis of analyses of money into this century. But its interpretation has become chaotic. Economists claim Aristotle as the father of economics, while classical scholars hold that Aristotle did no economics at all, only ethics. This book argues, contrary to the prevailing view, that Aristotle does develop a cohe…

  • Aristotle on Money

  • Finding the Mean

  • The Cambridge Companion to Marx

Open Access•Carver Carver, Paul Thomas et al.•BOOK•The Cambridge companion to Marx•1991

Marx was a highly original and polymathic thinker, unhampered by disciplinary boundaries, whose intellectual influence has been enormous. Yet in the wake of the collapse of Marxism-Leninism in Eastern Europe the question arises as to how important his work really is for us now. An important dimension of this volume is to place Marx's writings in their historical context and to separate what he actually said from what others (in particular, Engels…

  • Essentialism in the Thought of Karl Marx.

    Milton Fisk, Scott Meikle•ARTICLE•Noûs•1988

  • Aristotle and the political economy of the polis

    Open Access•Scott Meikle•ARTICLE•The Journal of Hellenic Studies•1979

Athens in the fourth century was undergoing a process of social and economic change of which a major component was the development of elements of market economy. The question to be addressed here is: what response does that historical process meet with in the work of Aristotle? I shall contend that Aristotle has a substantial body of thought, analytical in nature and intent, which is directed specifically to the analysis of that process. M. I. Fi…
