This chapter presents research done fifteen or more years ago, and makes a few observations that are tempered by time. The following is a summary from data gathered in three settings: Iceland, Northern Minnesota, and Quebec. Two sets of data providing material about cross-cultural mass media impact were gathered in Iceland, one by Thorbjorn Broddason and one by Thomas Dunn and Bragi Josepsson. L'Imagerie politique à la télévision
This article presents the results of a content analysis of the late evening television news during the last days of the 1980 Quebec referendum campaign. The analysis seeks to relate the differences in the political imageries broadcast by the four networks studied: SRC, CBC, TVA and CTV. Interviews were given to adult (N = 414) and high school (N = 218) populations in three northern Minnesota locations; one receiving Canadian TV only, one receiving Canadian and U.S. TV, and one receiving U.S. TV only. Controls for other media use, other exposure to Canada, and various socioeconomic dimensions were employed. Substan…
Authority Position, Legitimacy of Authority Structure, and Acquiescence to Authority
This paper reports a quasi-replication of Lopreato's test of hypotheses derived from Dahren-dorf's theory of class and class conflict in imperatively coordinated associations. Using survey data from a probability sample of Hamilton County, Ohio, adults, measures are constructed of position in the authority structure, perception of the legitimacy of the authority structure, and acquiescence to authority. Our analysis supports Dahrendorf's contenti…
