This paper analyzes a form of visual euphemism which we call “masking the mask.” During the Gulf War, Iraq fired 40 missiles on Israel. Citizens were issued with gas mask kits and were ordered into sealed rooms in their homes during attacks. Thousands of Israelis of all ages decorated or covered their gas mask kits. Although no chemical warheads were fired on the country, Israelis were unusually fearful of gassing because of associations with the…

Curses are a form of word magic. We present a typology of curses and then focus on one type-whoever curses intended to intimidate anyone violating the speaker or writer's wishes. Following a speech act analysis of whoever curses, we analyze a corpus of such curses in Anglo-Saxon legal documents. We discuss the structure and functions of curses and linguistic stylization. In an exploratory study of the rhetoric of persuasive appeals, four hypothetical situations in which a client seeks services from an official were presented to a heterogeneous group of Israeli army reservists. Respondents were asked to tell what should be said in each case in order to convince the official to grant the request. This paper presents a general formulation of the process of bureaucratic locialization with special emphasis on three factors which lead men to internalize bureaucratic norms and values: (1) formal education; (2) exposure tobureaucratic norms at work; and (3) experience as a client of bureaucracy.
