In the accounts of Cappelli and others, the influx of mid-level outside hires and extinction of internal career ladders indicates that external market forces have fatally compromised firm internal labor markets. Enhancing Critical Reading and Writing through Peer Reviews
Using a Web-based, conferencing system, we required students to electronically post draft answers to take-home essay questions. Students then produced peer reviews of each other's answers. Regression analyses indicated that the higher the quality of the review students gave their peers, the higher their own grades for revised essays. The pedagogical structuring of this activity draws heavily on the theoretical concept of 'scaffolding' or 'assiste…
An algorithm for identifying career lines from job history data
A comparatively simple method of uncovering the deep structure of career lines from job history data is described. Key decisions in the construction of the programming algorithm are related to substantive and theoretical ideas. Illustrations of the use of the method are offered, based on blue collar job histories from an American and a Dutch firm. Advantages, drawbacks and other applications of the program are discussed

This paper undertakes a selective review of theoretical and empirical studies of internal labor markets (ILMs). Substantive examples using these techniques are drawn from demography and from previous studies of the occupational mobility and income difference of blacks and whites.
