  • Intercorporeity of Animated Water

    Joseph Pugliese•ARTICLE•Angelaki•2023•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 13

In this essay, I examine the relationality between life and water in the context of its intercorporeal manifestations. Drawing on key aspects of Merleau-Pontian phenomenology, my concern is to reflect on water's enfleshment of life and its complex ecologies of intercorporeity. These Merleau-Pontian key aspects, I note, are in close dialogue with a number of Indigenous cosmo-epistemologies that envisage the world as constituted by profound ecologi…

  • More-Than-Human Lifeworlds, Settler Modalities of Geno-ecocide and Border Questions

    Open Access•Joseph Pugliese•ARTICLE•Journal of global indigeneity•2021

This article draws on a body of Aboriginal and Native American cosmo-epistemologies that are predicated on deep modes of relationality with more-than-human lifeworlds to question Euro-anthropocentric understandings of the concept of “borders.” Situated within this context, I interrogate Western conceptualisations of the border along two seemingly opposed axes: the production of violent border complexes by a settler colonial regime such as the Uni…

  • Expletive Tactics of Unmasking the Infrastructural Limits of Settler Law

    Open Access•Joseph Pugliese•ARTICLE•Journal of global indigeneity•2019

In this article Professor Joseph Pugliese discusses the inquest into David Dungay’s death and the Dungay family’s use of expletives in the course of the inquest, and how the validity of settler law to uncover the truth of how their loved one died and to identify who was responsible for this death was placed under interrogation

In the wake of the 200th anniversary of a massacre that was foundational to the expansion and consolidation of the Australian settler-colonial state, two Indigenous curators, Tess Allas and David Garneau, staged a landmark exhibition, With Secrecy and Dispatch, to commemorate this event and to place it in dialogue with other colonial massacres. Adrian Stimson, Siksika (Blackfoot) Nation, southern Alberta, Canada, contributed a drone-enabled, 2-ch…

  • Sexual Violence and the Border

    Open Access•Perera, Suvendrini Perera et al.•ARTICLE•Social & Legal Studies•2018•Citada por: 7

This article is concerned with delineating the material manifestations of state violence, with a particular focus on sexual violence in immigration detention prisons in the context of two settler-colonial nation states: Australia and the United States. It draws its impetus from the projected work of the late sociolegal scholar, Penny Pether, and her outline for a large-scale project on comparative regimes of indefinite detention. In our article, …

  • Border Control and Immigration

    Open Access•Joseph Pugliese•CHAPTER•Wiley Blackwell Encyclopedia of…•2017

A nation's sovereign status is predicated on securing and preserving its territorial spaces and political autonomy. The practices of border control play a crucial role in realizing these goals; they are deployed in order to surveil, identify, and screen prospective immigrants that wish to enter a particular nation. In the contemporary context, a complex array of border technologies are being deployed in order to control the flow of immigrants wel…

  • Drone casino mimesis

    Open Access•Joseph Pugliese•ARTICLE•Journal of Sociology•2016•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 5

This article stages an examination of the complex imbrication of contemporary civil society with war and militarized violence. I ground my investigation in the context of the increasing cooption of civil sites, practices and technologies by the United States military in order to facilitate their conduct of war and the manner in which drone warfare has now been seamlessly accommodated within major metropolitan cities such as Las Vegas, Nevada. In …

  • Geopolitics of Aboriginal Sovereignty

    Open Access•Joseph Pugliese•ARTICLE•Law/text/culture•2015

In her trenchant critique of the manner in which settler-colonial law, in its seemingly progressive manifestation through the Mabo Native Title legislation, in fact operated as a ‘particularly problematic form of neocolonial practice’, Penny Pether (1998: 130) demonstrates how this assertion of contemporary neocolonial practice was predicated on the High Court’s refusal to address the charged issue of Aboriginal sovereignty – with all the attenda…

  • Pedagogies of Quasi-Transcendental Perjury

    Open Access•Joseph Pugliese•ARTICLE•Somatechnics•2014•Referencias: 6

In this essay, I examine the relation between ethics and epistemology in the pedagogical context of the neoliberal academy. Specifically, I proceed critically to examine this relation in the context of my university's learning and teaching policy and two of its audit technologies: electronic Unit Guides and the Curriculum Mapping Summary. By deploying a Levinasian philosophy of ethics, I interrogate the manner in which these audit technologies fu…

  • State Violence and the Execution of Law

Joseph Pugliese•BOOK•State violence and the execution…•2013

State Violence and the Execution of Law stages a provocative analysis of how the biopolitical divide between human and animal has played a fundamental role in enabling state violence, including torture, secret imprisonment and killing-at-a-distance via drones. Analyzing the complex ways in which the United States government deploys law in order to consolidate and further imperial relations of power, Pugliese tracks the networks that enable the di…

  • Instrumental and Gratuitous Violence

    Joseph Pugliese•ARTICLE•Cultural Studies•2013

This essay examines the torture and death of Gul Rahman in the CIA secret prison/black site known as the Salt Pit, located in northern Kabul, Afghanistan. Virtually excised from the public record, his name and death are mentioned in footnote 28 of the Classified Response to the US Department of Justice Office of Professional Responsibility Classified Report. This report, prepared by Counsel for Jay S. Bybee, is a detailed and lengthy repost to th…

  • T echnologies of E xtraterritorialisation , S tatist V isuality and I rregular M igrants and R efugees

    Joseph Pugliese•ARTICLE•Griffith Law Review•2013

This article examines the increasing use of technologies of surveillance and identification by both the European Union and Australia in order to biopolitically preclude and control the entry of irregular migrants, refugees and asylum seekers from the global South. The central concern of the article is how these technologies of extraterritorialisation, as deployed by the state, function to constitute regimes of statist visuality that produce both …

  • Permanent Revolution

    Open Access•Joseph Pugliese•ARTICLE•Law Culture and the Humanities•2012

This essay stages a reflection on the complex relation that Levinas’ philosophy has to violence and revolution. Confining my commentary largely to one pivotal essay, “Ideology and Idealism,” I contend that Levinas must be seen as an advocate of revolution unconditionally oriented by ethics. He must be seen, moreover, as an advocate of nothing less than, in his own words, “permanent revolution.” Rather than offer a purely abstracted commentary on …

  • Prosthetics of Law and the Anomic Violence of Drones

    Joseph Pugliese•ARTICLE•Griffith Law Review•2011

This article examines the relationship between law and technology in the context of the use of drones by the United States in places like Afghanistan and Pakistan. Specifically, I examine the relation of law to lethal unmanned aerial combat technologies (drones), which conduct war and killing at a distance, in the context of two seemingly opposed figures: the parenthetical and the prosthetic. The parenthetical relation of law to technology operat…

  • Death in a Dry River

    Open Access•Perera, Joseph Pugliese•ARTICLE•Somatechnics•2011•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 1

This essay deals with the sentence handed down in April 2010 on the death of the 33 year-old Kumantaye Ryder in the dry creek bed of the Todd River in Alice Springs, Central Australia. The riverbed, we argue, is a racially marked and politically charged location that plays an historical and continuing role in defining relations between settler and colonized. We situate our analysis of this site in a context where autonomy over and access to land,…

  • The Reckoning of Possibles

    Joseph Pugliese•ARTICLE•Australian Feminist Law Journal•2011

In this essay, I focus on the death of an asylum seeker, Josefa Rauluni, at Villawood immigration detention centre, in order to address a series of critical questions concerning ethics, justice and non-negotiable responsibility. I contextualise this constellation of questions within a Levinasian framework of ethics as a first philosophy in order to suggest what needs to be done. I conclude the essay by transposing Levinas’ concept of the third, a…

    Joseph Pugliese•ARTICLE•Architectural Theory Review•2008•Citada por: 19

In this essay, I address Debord's concept of the spectalist society in the context of the transmutation of the trauma of the refugees incarcerated in Australia's immigration prisons into telegenic spectacle. I argue that the razor wire fences of these prisons generate a double movement of both enclosure and exposure. The potential for exposure is what enables refugee trauma to be telegenically transmitted as spectacle. The architecture of Austral…

  • Race as Category Crisis

    Joseph Pugliese•ARTICLE•Social Semiotics•2002•Citada por: 16•Referencias: 3

In this essay, I examine whiteness along two different axes. First, I discuss, in the context of Richard Dyer's White , the manner in which discussions of whiteness tend to be decontextualised and dehistoricised. Fundamentally, in White , whiteness is represented in terms of a homogeneous and self-identical category. In the second part of my essay, I focus on how racialised bodies, once they are situated within a specific historico-cultural conte…

  • Crisis heterotopias and border zones of the dead

    Joseph Pugliese•ARTICLE•Continuum•2009•Citada por: 9•Referencias: 4

In this essay, I examine transnational relations of biopower and colonialism in the context of two islands, Lampedusa and Christmas Island. By examining the manner in which both islands have been mobilized by Fortress Europe and Fortress Australia as frontline spaces that must thwart, through imprisonment and deportation, the landfall of asylum seekers and refugees on their shores, I mark their faultline status in the geopolitics of North/South r…

  • Civil modalities of refugee trauma, death and necrological transport

    Joseph Pugliese•ARTICLE•Social Identities•2009•Citada por: 8•Referencias: 5

In this essay, I focus on seemingly benign and innocuous civil sites, spaces and technologies – such as hotel rooms, demountables and shipping containers – and proceed to argue that, once these civil sites and technologies are situated within geopolitical relations of biopower, they become instrumental in the production of refugee trauma and death. I term the trauma and violence that refugees experience in the context of everyday civilian life ‘v…

    Joseph Pugliese•ARTICLE•Social Semiotics•2009•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 6

I open this article by offering an exposition of Gilles Deleuze's theorisation on the figure of the phantasm. I then proceed to situate this figure within post-9/11 economies of racial profiling – focusing, in particular, on the Islamophobic mobilisation of the niqab in order to advance arguments premised on differentialist and culturalist racism. Drawing on the work of the British Iranian artist Reza Aramesh, I bring into focus the manner in whi…
