Assessing petrographic variability and regional connections in Medieval and Modern Catalonian Greyware Pottery
The ecclesiastical complex of Illa del Rei is located on a coastal islet in the port of Mahón (Menorca, Balearic Islands). It was discovered by chance when a mosaic appeared which was made available in 1888 by a drawing by H. Llorente. New archaeological excavations undertaken in 2008 and 2013, have made it possible to re-examine the previous studies of the church’s pavement mosaic. This paper revises the mosaic taking into account the unpublishe…
Geophysical survey at the early Christian complex of Son Peretó (Mallorca, Balearic Islands, Spain)
Rural basilicas are the most important evidence of Christianization of the countryside on the island of Mallorca (Balearic Islands, Spain). Recent investigations of rural landscape transformations suggest that some churches were built along communication routes and linked to preexisting settlements. To obtain new data that could support this hypothesis, a geophysical survey has been carried out at the early Christian complex of Son Peretó, one of…
Analiz…
Buildings of faith
The Balearic Islands lie not far off the E coast of the Iberian Peninsula in a strategic position for navigation and trade routes (fig. 1 below). Classical writers considered them two groups of islands: Mallorca and Menorca (with adjacent islands and islets), forming the Baliarides , and Ibiza and Formentera (with other islets), considered the Pityussae . 1 In 123 B.C., the Balearides were conquered by the Romans and included first in Hispania Ci…
Recent anthropogenic climate change exceeds the rate and magnitude of natural Holocene variability on the Balearic Islands
Human-environmental interactions in Mediterranean climate regions from the Pleistocene to the Anthropocene
From mobile hunter-gatherers to a series of state societies, Mediterranean climate regions (MED) around the world have been critical areas for human and biological evolution for millennia. Comprised of five regions on six continents, the MED are important today for human settlement, global food production, transportation, industry, and tourism, but these regions are also extremely vulnerable to projected changes in their typically temperate clima…
Amphora production in the Guadalquivir valley (Spain) during the Late Roman period
Iberian amphorae beyond the mainland
Archaeometric analysis of Late Roman amphorae from Africa in the ancient city of Iluro (Mataró, Catalonia, Spain)
The production of traditional building materials in Oristano (Sardinia, Italy)
Residue Analysis of the Floors of a Charcoal Burner’s Hut at Naour (Morocco)
Organic residue analysis of experimental, medieval, and post-medieval glazed ceramics
Identifying wine and oil production
Excavating the Roman peasant II
This report details the survey, excavations and materials analysis carried out at Case Nuove (GR) in Tuscany, a site identified by surface survey as a possible rural house, but which excavation and materials analysis suggest was a small-scale agro-processing point of late Republican date. Through accompanying analysis of pollen and land-use data, the article considers the problems this type of site — the stand-alone agro-processing point — presen…
Understanding residues of oil production
Identifying wine markers in ceramics and plasters using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. Experimental and archaeological materials
From Roman to Byzantine
This paper explores the Late Antique occupation of rural territories in the eastern part of the island of Mallorca (Balearic Islands). Data and ceramics from several old field surveys have been re-analysed and different spatial analyses have been carried out in order to understand better the settlement patterns in this area of variable geomorphology, which includes plains, hills and coastlands. Evidence of Late Roman, Vandal and Byzantine occupat…
