This article describes the inter-relatedness and interdependency of social and academic processes and problems in the schooling of black children. Using data collected by the authors, this article demonstrates the usefulness and challenges of researching and ameliorating social and academic problems in a low-income, urban community that is in the throes of local, regional, and national economic influx. Public policy discourses with narrow views of morality and character are at the center of contemporary definitions and marketing of services for violent and troubled youths and children, especially in urban, low-income and black schools and communities in the US. Playing between Classes
A cultural and relational framework of social class is used to present an ethnographic portrait of class as it unfolds with race and gender in a black high school and community. Traditionally viewed as troubling, these students (and staff) play between classes in ways that impact structural analyses of class and their implications for public policy
Partnerships For Vitalizing Communities And Neighborhoods
In 1994, ten community and university partnerships joined the W. K. Kellogg Foundation to develop training strategies that would improve social systems and better serve families and neighborhoods.
