Regional and long-distance exchange of an emblematic ‘prestige’ ceramic in the Indo-Iranian Borderlands. Results of Neutron Activation Analysis
This article investigates the production and distribution of a high quality ceramic typical of the Indo-Iranian Borderlands ca 3000 BC, a ceramic we term here Late Shahi-Tump ware, often included under the generic label Emir Grey ware. Recorded at sites located hundreds of kilometers distant on the Southeastern Iranian Plateau, including Shahr-i Sokhta, Tepe Yahya, and Shahi-Tump, this ceramic is one of the few data points we have to approach the…
The camel remains from site HD-6 (Ra's al-Hadd, Sultanate of Oman)
Bone remains of camel (Camelus dromedarius) have been found in several sites of south-eastern Arabia, dating from the Late Holocene period to the Bronze Age, and generally attributed to wild animals. The new camel finds from the Early Bronze Age site of Ra's al-Hadd (HD-6) - dated with radiocarbon technique between 2890-2580 BC - are the oldest camel evidence in the Sultanate of Oman. This discovery represents an opportunity for a critical review…
Dating the Irrigation System of the Samarkand Oasis
The oasis of Samarkand in the Middle Zeravshan Valley (modern Uzbekistan) was a major political and economic center in ancient western Central Asia. The chronology of its irrigation system was, until now, only constrained by the quality and quantity of archaeological findings and several different hypotheses have been proposed for it. We use a new approach combining archaeological surveying, radiocarbon dating, sedimentary analysis, and the numer…
Cultural Relationships beyond the Iranian Plateau
This paper presents a systematic review of the archaeological evidence for cultural interaction between the Helmand and the Indus during the 3rd millennium BCE. A series of artefacts found at Shahr-i Sokhta and nearby sites (Iranian Seistan) that were presumably imported from Baluchistan and the Indus domain are discussed, together with finds from the French excavations at Mundigak (Kandahar, Afghanistan) that might have the same origin. Other ar…
Investigations on ancient beads from the Sultanate of Oman (Ra's al-Hadd - Southern Oman)
A study has been carried out on the mineralogical composition of stone beads found in the course of archaeological excavations carried out at the site of Ra's al-Hadd in Southern Oman. The data provide information about the raw material and technology used for beads production. Several beads and micro-beads made of white paste of different shapes and sizes have been analysed. They range, in size, from two to four millimetres in diameter, two to f…

Th Millennium BC Lapis Lazuli Working at Mehrgarh, Pakistan
The paper describes the lapis lazuli industry recovered by the French archaeological mission at Mehrgarh on the surface of the site MR2, dating to the IVth millennium ВС. This find represents one of the earliest lapis lazuli bead making assemblages in South Asia, and it shows the involvement of the Kachi plain region in the production of luxury ornaments since comparatively ancient periods. We attempt to outline a basic reconstruction of the bead…
Qurum
First evidence of prehistoric coastal adaptations along the Arabian shores of the Indian Ocean is being recovered at Qurum in the Sultanate of Oman. The cluster of shell‐middens currently excavated relates to a small population of fishermen of the 5th and 4th millennia B.C. having a strongly maritime‐oriented culture. The economy was based on local resource intensification, but stock‐breeding of goats and cattle was practised as well, suggesting …
The Economic Systems of Ancient Oaxaca
Archaeological data from a regional settlement pattern survey of the Valley of Oaxaca, Mexico, are used to monitor how scarce goods and resources were allocated to members of society through eight phases from 600 B.C. to A.D. 1520. The goal is to determine how distinct historical social structures performed economically in terms of the goods and resources recoverable archaeologically. Measures utilized include land use and settlement characterist…

The Development of Social Stratification in Bronze Age Europe [and Comments and Reply]
The emergence of a hereditary elite class in Bronze Age Europe is now widely interpreted in terms of the redistributive activities of a managerial ruling class. This fuctionalist account of elite origins goes against a uniformitarian understanding of what ruling classes do in complex societies. It also is poorly suited to the concrete evidence for Bronze Age cultures in Europe. The rise of hereditary, superordinate social strata in prehistoric Eu…
Shifts in Production and Organization
Periods of intensification alternate with periods of shift of mode of production in pristine-state sequences; attendant upon these are regular shifts in sociopolitical organization. This paper develops an evolutionary model of these regularities and their relation to other traditional questions of state formation. Specifically it notes that rarely if ever do such transformations affect only a single precocious polity, at any level of sociocultura…

Typology and Socioeconomical Implications of Entomological Finds from some Ancient Near Eastern Sites
Once screening and floatation systems have been adopted in an excavation, most ancient sites in the Near East and Iran have been providing us with well-preserved remains of insects and other arthropods to an extent as large as in turf deposits of western Europe. The present paper is based on results from floatation works carried out at Shahr-i Sokhta (Sistan, Iran), Tepe Hasanlu (Azerbaijan) and Tel Baroda in Ctesiphon. Among others is here discu…

Dilmun
Like Bibby's two previous books, Looking for Dilmun is written for the general public. It is an account of the research carried out by a large team of Danish scholars, led by P. V. Glob and Bibby himself, in the Arab states on the Persian Gulf. The expeditions began seventeen years ago, and have been both intensive and productive: over the years, they have yielded an impressive amount of material which, with only a few gaps, now covers almost the…
