Seismic damage characteristics and vulnerability analysis of Tibetan earth-timber structure buildings in the Ms 6.8 earthquake in Tingri, Tibet, China
Following the Ms 6.8 Tingri earthquake in Tibet, China on 7 January 2025, a field investigation was conducted to document the seismic damage and failure mechanisms of traditional Tibetan earth-timber structures. Seismic damage data from comparable buildings in regions with similar or higher seismic intensity are compiled and analyzed to evaluate the seismic performance and vulnerability characteristics under strong ground motions. The results ind…
Benacerraf’s Problem and the Accessibility of Frege’s ‘Third Realm’
This paper extends Benacerraf’s problem – concerning the tension between Platonism of mathematical objects and epistemological access of mathematic truth – to Frege’s ‘third realm’ of thoughts, identifying key flaws in Frege’s theory: the language-independence, epistemological inaccessibility, and structural incoherence of thoughts. It proposes a revised account that construes thoughts as linguistically mediated, intersubjective entities, which r…
Why Do We “Must” and “Should”?—Bridging the Gap from “Is” to “Ought”
The KK Principle and the Strong Notion of Knowledge
In his Knowledge and Belief (1962), Hintikka establishes his system of epistemic logic with the KK (Knowing that One Knows, in symbols, Kp→KKp) principle (KK for short). However, his system of epistemic logic and the KK principle are grounded upon his strong notion of knowledge, which requires that knowledge is infallible, that is, it makes further inquiry pointless, and becomes ‘discussion-stopper’; knowledge implies truth, to wit, cognitive age…
Two different approaches to philosophy a critical reflection on contemporary Chinese philosophy
By means of critical reflection on the current situation of Chinese philosophy, this article aims to clarify two different approaches to philosophy. One is for scholars to focus on original texts and thought tradition, concerned with interpretation and inheritance; even in this way, scholars can achieve theoretical innovation through creative interpretation. The other is for researchers to face up questions from academics and from reality, and ma…

Six Groups of Paradoxes in Ancient China From the Perspective of Comparative Philosophy
This paper divides the sophisms and paradoxes put forth by Chinese thinkers of the pre-Qin period of China (before 221 BCE) into six groups: paradoxes of motion and infinity, paradoxes of class membership, semantic paradoxes, epistemic paradoxes, paradoxes of relativization, other logical contradictions. It focuses on the comparison between the Chinese items and the counterparts of ancient Greek and even of contemporary Western philosophy, and co…
Fortified settlements and the settlement system in the Northern Zone of the Han Empire
How far are settlement patterns affected by imperial systems of administration and control? The prototype city state consisted perhaps only of the population centre and its surrounding hinterland, but large territorial states, and still more empires, required complex systems of government and defence. Historical sources tell of the Chinese imperial system of 'commanderies' or provinces, and 'county seats' or subordinate centres, but this may conc…
A Descriptivist Refutation of Kripke's Modal Argument and of Soames's Defence
This article systematically challenges Kripke's modal argument and Soames's defence of this argument by arguing that, just like descriptions, names can take narrow or wide scopes over modalities, and that there is a big difference between the wide scope reading and the narrow scope reading of a modal sentence with a name. Its final conclusions are that all of Kripke's and Soames's arguments are untenable due to some fallacies or mistakes; names a…
