  • Evidence of horse riding in domestic horses during the Bronze Age in Iberia

    Open Access•José Antonio Riquelme-Cantal, José Antonio Riquelme‐cantal et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2026

The adoption of horse for transport purposes profoundly reshaped mobility, exchange, and socio-economic organization, yet identifying early ridden and/or transport horses in Iberian archaeological contexts remains challenging due to the poor preservation of tack and other perishable equipment. Here we present an exceptional equine cranial specimen of 17 to 20 years of age at death from the Late Bronze Age site of Castillo Reyes (Pinto, Madrid, ce…

A new strontium (87Sr/86Sr) isoscape of the Iberian Peninsula is provided with an open-access R script. • Carbon and oxygen isotopes show horses received fodder, while caprines relied on local grazing resources. • Multi-isotopic analysis offers new insights into Tartessian livestock management and animal husbandry (5th c. BCE). • Findings illuminate the scale and cultural significance of mass animal sacrifice in Iron Age Iberia. The excavations a…

The great site of Valencina de la Concepción, near Seville in the lower Guadalquivir valley of southwest Spain, is presented in the context of debate about the nature of Copper Age society in southern Iberia as a whole. Many aspects of the layout, use, character and development of Valencina remain unclear, just as there are major unresolved questions about the kind of society represented there and in southern Iberia, from the late fourth to the l…

  • New speleothem data from Molinos and Ejulve caves reveal Holocene hydrological variability in northeast Iberia

    Open Access•Ana Moreno, Carlos Pérez‐mejía et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2017

New speleothem records from northeastern Iberian caves provide data to explore the climatic patterns during the Holocene. We present δ 13 C and Mg/Ca from three speleothems from two different caves located in the Iberian Range allowing replication of the climatic signal for several millennia. Through the integration of those stalagmites covering since the Holocene onset to 2 ka, the early Holocene (11.7–8.5 ka) appears as the wettest interval. A …

  • Vegetation, fire, climate and human disturbance history in the southwestern Mediterranean area during the late Holocene

    Open Access•Gonzalo Jiménez‐moreno, Gonzalo Jiménez-Moreno et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2013

Detailed pollen, charcoal, isotope and magnetic susceptibility data from an alpine lake sediment core from Sierra Nevada, southern Spain record changes in vegetation, fire history and lake sedimentation since ca. 4100 cal yr BP. The proxies studied record an arid period from ca. 3800 to 3100 cal yr BP characterized by more xerophytic vegetation and lower lake levels. A humid period is recorded between ca. 3100 and 1850 cal yr BP, which occurred i…

  • The Iberian–Roman Humid Period (2600–1600 cal yr BP) in the Zoñar Lake varve record (Andalucía, southern Spain)

    Open Access•Celia Martin-Puertas, Blas L Valero-Garcés et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2009

The Iberian–Roman Humid Period (IRHP, 2600–1600 cal yr BP), is the most humid phase of the last 4000 yr in southern Spain as recorded in the sedimentary sequence of Zoñar Lake (37°29′00′′N, 4°41′22′′ W, 300 m a.s.l.). A varve chronology supported by several AMS 14 C dates allows study of the lake evolution at annual scale in response to human impact and climate changes. There are four climate phases within this period: i) gradual transition (2600…
