A Muslim Shrine in Tunisia
In the North-Tunisian town of Testour one can observe the role of the saint most respected in Testour society: Sidi Ali el Arian. People visit his shrine to make individual offerings and for collective celebrations, especially the annual festival known as a zerda. In the 1970s, people in rural northern Tunisia travelled in family groups to visit the shrines of saints ('friends of God') near them in search of desired health outcomes and emotional reassurance, sometimes spending overnight and enjoying the occasion for its recreational aspects as well as act of worship.
