The disciplinary variations of diachronic trends of syntactic complexity in research article abstracts
From ‘form’ to ‘will’
Jhering’s intellectual transformation from formalism to realism – manifested as a methodological transition from his early adherence to ‘conceptual jurisprudence’ to his later advocacy of ‘teleological jurisprudence’ – constitutes a profound response to the political and social upheavals of nineteenth-century Germany. In his early thought, Jhering maintained that legal formalism could effectively resist political arbitrariness and safeguard indiv…

The common perception of machines is that they are cold and stiff, making the concept of creativity seem unrelated. This mismatch suggests that human-agent collaborations could suffer greatly in innovative contexts. Infusing AI with narcissistic traits, typically considered human, could alter this scenario. Drawing from the theory of human-agent compatibility, two experiments were carried out, with AIs programmed to exhibit either high or low lev…

Government-directed urban growth, firm entry, and industrial land prices in Chinese cities
We examine the effects of a large-scale administrative reorganization in China, where counties are annexed into cities to accommodate urban spatial expansion. We present a simple model to illustrate how this government-directed urban growth via annexation may affect firm entry decisions and in turn land market outcomes. The key idea is that annexation indicates the direction of future urban expansion and helps coordinate expectation. Using nation…

Measuring linguistic complexity in Chinese
The measurement of linguistic complexity has been a heated topic in linguistics. While previous studies have mainly centered around English and other European languages, Chinese seems neglected to some extent, and the existing Chinese linguistic complexity metrics have room for improvement. Against these backdrops, the present study applied an information-theoretic approach - the Kolmogorov complexity system - to measure Chinese linguistic comple…

Urban bias, migration control and rural land policy
Urban-biased politics often drives distortionary policies in many countries. We develop a political economy model in which the government faces a trade-off between retaining urban support and expanding its industrial rent base. The model shows that while an increase in urbanization strengthens the government’s incentives to adopt rural land reform and to encourage rural–urban migration, an increase in urban productivity has the opposite effect. T…

The Feminist Concept of Self and Modernity
The relationship between community and individual is the key issue in contemporary political philosophy and ethics. The concept of self seems very important for individualism, communitarianism and feminism when they respond to relationships, particularly when we have to situate selfhood in the conditions of modernity. Consequently, this paper can be divided into seven parts. First it introduces the debate about the concept of the self between ind…

Urban heat islands in China enhanced by haze pollution
The urban heat island (UHI), the phenomenon of higher temperatures in urban land than the surrounding rural land, is commonly attributed to changes in biophysical properties of the land surface associated with urbanization. Here we provide evidence for a long-held hypothesis that the biogeochemical effect of urban aerosol or haze pollution is also a contributor to the UHI. Our results are based on satellite observations and urban climate model ca…
