Professor Harry Roderick Kedward (1937–2023), universally known as Rod Kedward, is best known for his groundbreaking studies of the French Resistance, discussed in diverse ways by several contributors to this roundtable.1 Yet as Chris Warne emphasizes below, Rod’s interests extended in time and space well beyond the Second World War. Indeed, to fully comprehend Rod, it is important to understand him as a soixante-huitard—close witness to many of …

  • The Return of the Republic

    Hanna Diamond•ARTICLE•French Politics Culture & Society•2019•Citada por: 1

During the Liberation of Toulouse, crowd photography dominated the local press rather than the scenes of combat and barricades that marked coverage in Paris and elsewhere. This article shows how crowd photography contributed to a common construction of republicanism across the Toulouse press and exhibitions. It argues that the circulation of these images not only communicated the message that the "people" were once again sovereign, but also impli…

    Hanna Diamond•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2015

This important book deals with the experience and management of almost one million German men who were held captive in France in the aftermath of the Second World War. Their plight, overshadowed by the fate of prisoners held in the USSR, stirred little interest at the time and has continued to go largely unnoticed in scholarly literature. While the controversies around the exaggerated claims of ill treatment by the Canadian author and historian J…

  • Prisoners of the Peace’

    Open Access•Hanna Diamond•ARTICLE•European History Quarterly•2013

Historians have paid little attention to the over half a million German prisoners-of-war who were deployed for the purposes of reconstruction in France between 1944 and 1948. In an effort to contain the rural labour crisis over half were allocated to agriculture. Despite an initially hostile reception by the French, this article argues that moving the prisoners into farms marked the beginning of a strikingly rapid process of acceptance by these l…

  • Miners, Masculinity and the ‘Bataille du Charbon’ in France 1944–1948

    Hanna Diamond•ARTICLE•Modern & Contemporary France•2011•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 2

In 1944, the French provisional government, backed by the Parti communiste français and the Confédération générale du travail, undertook an aggressive propaganda campaign to persuade miners to embark upon a 'battle for coal' which raised their efforts in extracting coal to that of a national endeavour. At the same time, miners had great hopes that nationalisation of the coal industry, under discussion at this time, would bring significant improve…

    Open Access•Hanna Diamond•ARTICLE•Diasporas•2006
