Associations between working memory and mathematical ability in elementary school children
Unraveling the role of patterning ability in preschool children’s Chinese reading and mathematics through distinct phonological processing pathways
Differential predictors of complex fraction approximation and exact calculation in young adults
Calculating complex fractions can be challenging for many adults. While previous research has largely focused on factors influencing mathematical calculations in children and adolescents, less attention has been given to the cognitive factors affecting complex fraction calculations in young adults. This study intended to investigate how complex fraction approximation and exact calculation in young adults are influenced by general and numerical co…
Distinct individual difference patterns in reading and non-verbal reasoning networks of children
Orthographic knowledge and morphological awareness in kindergarten predict children’s reading fluency in fifth grade through dorsal and ventral pathways
Longitudinal associations between metalinguistic awareness, executive functions, and Chinese character reading
How do basic numerical skills matter in the association of phonological processing with arithmetic
Symbolic numerical skills (i.e., number ordering ability) rather than nonsymbolic numerical skills are important for explaining the relationship between phonological processing and arithmetic in primary school children
Influence of socioeconomic status on children’s reading abilities
Family socioeconomic status (SES) has been shown to be associated with children's academic abilities. However, how SES influences children's reading abilities across grades still warrants investigation. This study recruited 1st - through 6th -grade children (N = 1,534) and examined the role of Home Learning Environment in the relationship between SES and reading abilities. The results revealed that the number of books at home and the reading init…
Bidirectional relationships between phonological processing and basic number knowledge in kindergarten children
An ongoing debate on the association between phonological processing and number knowledge concerns the extent to which they influence each other during early childhood. The current study aims to establish the direction of the developmental relationship between these two kinds of abilities at an early age. Eighty-two Chinese kindergarten children were followed from 5 to 6 years old with a one-year interval. We investigated three phonological proce…

Transcranial photobiomodulation on the left inferior frontal gyrus enhances Mandarin Chinese L1 and L2 complex sentence processing performances
This study investigated the causal enhancing effect of transcranial photobiomodulation (tPBM) over the left inferior frontal gyrus (LIFG) on syntactically complex Mandarin Chinese first language (L1) and second language (L2) sentence processing performances. Two (L1 and L2) groups of participants (thirty per group) were recruited to receive the double-blind, sham-controlled tPBM intervention via LIFG, followed by the sentence processing, the verb…
Phonological processing and spatial attention contribute to mathematics performance in different ways
The longitudinal contribution of mapping to arithmetic
BACKGROUND: Recent studies have revealed the association between mapping and arithmetic (Ferres-Forga et al., J. Numer. Cogn., 8, 2022, 123; LeFevre et al., J. Numer. Cogn., 8, 2022, 1). AIM: The underlying mechanism remains unclear. MATERIALS & METHODS: The current study recruited 118 kindergarten children and followed up on them three times at 6-month intervals. They completed measures to assess mapping skills (T1), non-verbal IQ (T1), numeral …

How does parental involvement matter for children's academic achievement during school closure in primary school
BackgroundCOVID-19 has infected over twenty million people across 200 countries. UNESCO claimed that more than 190 countries had implemented countrywide school closures, which resulted in preventing 1.6 billion students of their classroom learning opportunities. As children are unable to study in the classroom with teachers' supervision, the importance of parental engagement is amplified in children's learning at home.AimThe primary purpose of th…

Effect of Twinning on Chinese and English Vocabulary Knowledge
Vocabulary knowledge was tested in a native (Cantonese-Chinese) and foreign (English) language in 150 twins and 150 singletons aged 6–11 years, matched on age, gender, grade level, nonverbal intelligence, parents’ education, family income, and number of siblings and household members. The singletons clearly outperformed the twins on the native vocabulary, but this “twinning effect” was much less noticeable for the foreign vocabulary. The effect o…

The relationship between mental rotation and arithmetic
Mental rotation is positively related to arithmetic ability; however, the mechanism underlying this relationship remains unclear. The possible roles of working memory, place‐value concept, and number line estimation in the correlation between mental rotation and whole‐number computation were investigated. One hundred and fifty‐five first‐grade students were tested to determine their mental rotation ability, arithmetic ability, and non‐verbal inte…
Variability in Asian parents’ English and mathematics skills
What explains parental English word reading and mathematics performance? The present study examined whether parent-, family-, and child-related variables explain parents’ English word reading and mathematics performances among two groups of Asian parents. The data were collected from 152 Hong Kong and 280 Cebu City (Philippines) parents who learn English as a second language. The academic performances of their children (Hong Kong: Mean age = 8.72…
