Mapping the response
How do first responders successfully arrive to all the unique addresses they are called to for emergencies? This work investigates how firefighters are trained to navigate their response areas through the development of cognitive maps. It also seeks to understand what navigation tools are available to ensure successful navigation, and how firefighters use these tools. Using an online survey, we collected training, navigational aid, and demographi…
Measuring configural spatial knowledge
People use environmental knowledge to maintain a sense of direction in daily life. This knowledge is typically measured by having people point to unseen locations (judgments of relative direction) or navigate efficiently in the environment (shortcutting). Some people can estimate directions precisely, while others point randomly. Similarly, some people take shortcuts not experienced during learning, while others mainly follow learned paths. Notab…
Directionality eclipses agency
Research on spatial perspective taking has suggested that including an agent in the display benefits performance. However, little research has examined the mechanisms underlying this benefit. Here, we examine how an agent benefits performance by examining its effects on three mental steps in a perspective-taking task: (1) imagining oneself at a location (station point) within in the array, (2) adopting a different perspective (heading), and (3) p…
Spatial reasoning, mathematics, and gender
BACKGROUND: The role of gender in both spatial and mathematics performance has been extensively studied separately, with a male advantage often found in spatial tasks and mathematics from adolescence. Spatial reasoning is consistently linked to mathematics proficiency, yet despite this, little research has investigated the role of spatial orientation and gender in the relationship between spatial reasoning and mathematics. AIMS: In the present st…

What determines our navigational abilities?
Naïve Cartography
Map-making has traditionally been the domain of professional cartographers, but with the advent of interactive display systems, users now have the flexibility to create and configure their own digital maps and other visual displays. This flexibility can be beneficial only if users have good intuitions about which display configurations are effective or ineffective for different tasks. Here we examine people's intuitions about display effectivenes…
Spatial abilities at different scales
A dissociation between mental rotation and perspective-taking spatial abilities
Development of a self-report measure of environmental spatial ability
A dissociation between object manipulation spatial ability and spatial orientation ability
Resolving signals to cohesion
This study employs reading time and eye‐fixation paradigms to test two models of how readers create bridging inferences to resolve signals to textual cohesion (e.g., too, as in Juan is a shortstop. Maria is athletic too). One model views bridges as stand‐alone propositions that are minimally necessary to maintain the coherence of the text. The other model views bridges as the result of a form of deduction in which the reader tacitly establishes p…
How are visuospatial working memory, executive functioning, and spatial abilities related? A latent-variable analysis.
Inferring Cross-Sections
Three experiments examined how cognitive abilities and qualities of external visualizations affected performance of a mental visualization task; inferring the cross-section of a complex three-dimensional object. Experiment 1 investigated the effect of animations designed to provide different task-relevant views of the external object. Experiment 2 examined the effects of both stereoscopic and motion-based depth cues. Experiment 3 examined the eff…
Cognitively Inspired and Perceptually Salient Graphic Displays for Efficient Spatial Inference Making
Developing a visual hierarchy in map displays that is congruent with thematic levels of relevance is a fundamental cartographic design task. Cartographers employ a set of visual variables (e.g., size, color hue, color value, orientation, etc.) for 2-D, static maps to systematically match levels of thematically relevant information to a perceptual hierarchy based on figure–ground relationships. In this article, we empirically investigate the relat…
