  • Outpatients clinics and the 1930 Mental Treatment Act

    Open Access•Rob Ellis, R R W Ellis et al.•ARTICLE•History of Psychiatry•2026

This article explores the introduction of the 1930 Mental Treatment Act (MTA) and places it within a longer-term trajectory of the development of acute services. While many historians have considered the apparent novelty of the MTA, they have tended to see the development of outpatients clinics as separate from the ongoing demand on in-patient services. Using patient case files from the West Riding Mental Hospital, in the northern English county …

  • Embodied Space

  • Bodies and Other Objects

    Open Access•Rob Ellis•BOOK•Bodies and Other Objects•2018

Bodies and Other Objects is written for students, scholars and anyone with an interest in embodied cognition - the claim that the human mind cannot be understood without regard for the actions and capacities of the body. The impulse to write this book was a dissatisfaction with the inconsistent, and often shallow, use of the term 'embodied cognition'. This text attempts to reframe cognitive science with a unified theory of embodied cognition in w…

  • ‘Without decontextualisation’

    Open Access•Rob Ellis, R R W Ellis•ARTICLE•History of Psychiatry•2015

This paper builds on recent scholarship exploring museum exhibitions and the heritage of mental health care. Using the development of the Stanley Royd Museum in the mid-1970s as a case study, the paper will examine the rationale for the opening of the museum and its link to changing perceptions of mental hospitals in both historical study and what was then ‘current’ practice. It will then provide an overview of the proposed audience for the new m…

  • Asylums and Sport

    Rob Ellis, R R W Ellis•ARTICLE•The International Journal of the…•2013•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 2

In the histories of mental institutions, sports and recreations have played a central role. Particular focus has been placed on staff and patients but it is only recently that historians have sought to explain the role of sport in general, and cricket in particular, in therapeutic terms. In addition, other recent work has highlighted the importance of cricket as one of the activities that placed asylums at the centre of a wider network within soc…

  • Micro-affordance

Open Access•Rob Ellis, Mike Tucker•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•2000•Citada por: 7

It is suggested that seen objects potentiate a range of actions associated with them, irrespective of the intentions of the viewer. Evidence for this possibility is provided by the data from two experiments, both of which required a participant to make a binary motor response to an auditory stimulus. In the first experiment the response was a power or precision grip, which was performed whilst simultaneously viewing a real object which would norm…
