Discovering Men
Feminism has put the critical study of men and masculinities firmly on to the academic agenda. First published in 1992, Discovering Men explores key issues in this field of study, looking at the theoretical, practical, and political difficulties that arise when men begin to study themselves, and considering the deep assumptions that underlie this area of enquiry. The author investigates the various strategies that may be adopted in exploring men …

Superdads
Gayle Kaufman begins this readable and sympathetic study by noting how she was struck by the number of fathers she saw waiting at a school bus stop. Some years ago, this would have appeared quite a

Rethinking Family Practices
Leading family sociologist David Morgan revisits his highly influential 'family practices' approach in this new book. Exploring its impact, and how it has been critiqued, Morgan shows the continued re
Marriage
Dictionary definitions of marriage usually begin with something like “the legal union of a man and a woman in order to live together and often to have children.” Even in such a simple and limited definition, some key elements and some potential complexities are highlighted. First, we are dealing with a definition referring to legal criteria. However, since legal definitions differ, we can reasonably expect practices and understandings of marriage…
Transforming Masculinities
Seidler, V.J. Transforming Masculinities: Men, Cultures, Bodies, Power, Sex and Love , 2006 . New York : Routledge xxvii +180pp £21.99 (pb) ISBN 0-415-37074-4 I found this book, the most recent that Victor Seidler has written on issues of men and masculinity, a frustrating read. On the one hand, it contains some interesting and unfamiliar material and some important arguments. Seidler seeks to sustain a critique of universalistic, rationalistic m…
Revisiting 'Communities in Britain
In this article I re-examine Frankenberg's Communities in Britain (1966) and his use of a 'morphological continuum' within his analysis. This analysis is itself a reassessment of some influential community studies conducted within the British Isles. I look at some particular ideas within the more theoretical part of this book, especially the ideas of 'social redundancy' and the distinction between 'complex' and 'complicated'. I then consider some…
Family Theory and Research in Great Britain
This paper argues that the development of family research and theory in Great Britain has been strengthened by the fluidity of boundaries between various disciplines and methodolo- gies employed in the explanation of family life. Indeed, changes in the definition of family have been at the heart of the diversity and fluidity characteristic of the study of family. Studies of economic issues, gender and class distinctions, and family processes have…

Gendering Organizational Change
In this paper we argue for the need to develop a gendered understanding of processes of organizational change. However, this should not simply be seen as a question of the proportions of women and men at different levels in the hierarchy. Organizational culture and the gendered metaphors and rhetorics that are used within the organization are also shown to be significant. Our analysis focuses upon a single case, a historical and sociological stud…
