  • Tiana Koutzarova, Das Transzendentale bei Ibn Sīnā. Zur Metaphysik als Wissenschaft erster Begriffs- und Urteilsprinzipien (Brill, 2009)

    Jules Janssens•ARTICLE•Bulletin d'études orientales•2022

1, Fī al-ʾumūr al-kulliyya min ʿilm al-ṭibb , a critical edition by Najafgholi Habibi, with forewords by Seyyed Hossein Nasr and Gholamreza Aavani (Hamadan, Iran

    Open Access•Jules Janssens•ARTICLE•Arabic Sciences and Philosophy•2021

That Ibn Sīnā’s “Canon of medicine” figures among the major classics of the history of medicine is doubted by no serious historian of medicine, eastern or western, Islamic or non-Islamic alike. It is therefore all the more surprising that so far no serious critical edition of this text was available. Certainly, a first, very timid step toward a really critical edition (published during the years 1982-1996) was made at the Institute of the History…

  • Arabic Humanities, Islamic Thought

    Open Access•Jules Janssens•ARTICLE•Ilahiyat Studies•2021

First Paragraph: This Festschrift, presented to its dedicatee on the occasion of his seventieth birthday, reflects well the outstanding quality and wide range of scholarship of one of the leading American Arabists of the last several decades, Everett K. Rowson. Looking at the list of this latter ́s publications (pp. XX-XXIX) one cannot but admire the wide variety of subjects which the latter has seriously dealt with: from philosophy to literature…

  • Philosophical Theology in Islam

    Open Access•Jules Janssens, Kayhan Özaykal•ARTICLE•Ilahiyat Studies•2021

First paragraph: Philosophical Theology in Islam, edited by Ayman Shihadeh and Jan Thiele, is a thirteen-chapter work of robust scholarship into post-classical Ashʿarī theology that boasts papers covering the four corners of the Muslim world. With a book of this scope and size, it is impossible for the reviewer to satisfactorily treat each chapter equally. Specifically, therefore, I attend more closely to chapters dealing with philosophical theor…

  • Al-Ghazālī on Condemnation of Pride and Self-Admiration (Kitāb dhamm al-kibr wa’l-ʿujb); Book XXIX of The Revival of the Religious Sciences (Iḥyāʾ ʿulūm al-dīn). Translated with introduction and notes…

    Open Access•Jules Janssens•ARTICLE•Ilahiyat Studies•2020

First Paragraph: The book under review forms part of a large-scale project undertaken by The Islamic Texts Society to offer a critical translation of every book which comprises al-Ghazālī’s Iḥyāʾ ʿulūm al-dīn (The Revival of the Religious Sciences). The explicit aim of the endeavor is to produce volumes which are not only for scholars working in the field, but also for the wider public. Meeting both demands is no easy task for a translator. Fortu…

  • A Greek and Arabic Lexicon (GALex). Materials for a Dictionary of the Medieval Translations from Greek into Arabic. Fascicle 9

    Jules Janssens•ARTICLE•Journal of Islamic Studies•2012

The GALex project is a major one, the first fascicle of which appeared in 1992. That twenty years later only nine fascicles have been published may seem surprising, especially in an era of computers. But it has to be stressed that this is an analytical lexicon giving minute attention to the semantic, morphological and syntactical distinctions of every word. Hence it does more than list simple word correspondences as would a computer database, or …

  • The Latin Translation of the Physics

    Jules Janssens•ARTICLE•Oriens•2012

The Latin translation of the Physics of the Shifā' shows interesting readings that are uncon- firmed or only partially confirmed by the Arabic editions and their apparatus of variants. This applies both to the 12th century Toledo and the 13th century Burgos translations. Due to the 'de verbo ad verbum' style of both translations, one easily can reconstruct the Arabic text read by the Latin translator. By way of several concrete examples it is sho…

  • Al-Kindī

    Open Access•Jules Janssens•ARTICLE•Journal of Qur'anic Studies•2007

Al-Kindī is well known as the first great ‘Islamic philosopher’. In contrast to his eminent successors, i.e. al-Fārābī, Ibn Sīnā and Ibn Rushd, he adhered to the idea of a creation in time, not to that of the eternity of the world. He appears to have made this choice out of religious motives: certainly he did find support in the philosophical arguments of Philoponus, but one is inclined to believe that he accepted this point of view because of wh…

  • Chance and Determinism in Avicenna and Averroes * by Catarina Belo

    Jules Janssens•ARTICLE•Journal of Islamic Studies•2007

The book is a revised version of the author's doctoral thesis (Oxford, 2004). It not only deals with two giants of classical Islamic philosophy but also with a very difficult issue, namely the problem of determinism. Especially on Ibn Sīnā, modern scholarship shows a wide range of opinions, as carefully presented by the author (pp. 14–16). In elaborating her own view, she concentrates on three major topics: chance; matter; and celestial causation…
