When Old Is Not Old
This short paper discusses two early Vedic compounds beginning jarad-: jaradasti- and jaradvisam (RV 5.8.2). Superficially jarad- looks like a form of the adjective jarant- / jurat- 'old', but it will be argued that in both cases a diachronic accident has produced this illusion.
