  • Imbalanced Sex Ratios in Sex Estimation Using Probabilistic Sex Diagnosis (Diagnose Sexuelle Probabiliste [DSP])

Open Access•Samuel Bedecarrat, Frédéric Santos et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2026

This study investigates biases in sex estimation using the DSP (Diagnose Sexuelle Probabiliste—Probabilistic Sex Diagnosis) method in bioarchaeological contexts. The aim is to assess whether this method overperforms in estimating one of the sexes and to explore the implications for palaeodemographic interpretations. A meta‐analysis was conducted using data from 32 archaeological and current populations ( n = 2303), spanning prehistoric to modern …

Open Access•Zoé Corselle, Samuel Bedecarrat et al.•ARTICLE•Cahiers du Centre de recherches…•2025

Taphonomic alterations on bioarchaeological remains are common and can have a major impact on osteological collections. During geometric morphometrics analyses, the bones used may be more or less well preserved and may limit feasible studies. We investigated the impact of taphonomic surface alterations on bone shape studies. To this end, we scanned by microtomography 19 humeri from the La Granède site (a medieval funerary complex in Millau, 12) i…

  • Ships' boys, nippers and powder monkies

Open Access•Lorina Coiffard, Rottier et al.•ARTICLE•Cahiers du Centre de recherches…•2025

During the era of the British Royal Navy in the 18th and 19th centuries, young boys made up a significant portion of the crews on warships. The Navy recruited these boys from as early as 6 years old, with the goal of providing them with many years of training. They received instructions on board, the youngests spent most of their time playing, while the older ones worked. As they grew older, the boys had to take on more and more sailor’s duties. …

  • Who was a ‘Child’ During the Neolithic in France

M Le Roy, Rottier et al.•ARTICLE•Childhood in the Past•2018

In France, during the Neolithic period (5700–2100 BC), several cultural groups have been identified. In the Early Neolithic, burials were simple and gathered in small groups. This was followed by monumentalization and collectivization during the Middle Neolithic, before becoming exclusive at the end of the Neolithic. The aim of this research is to focus on children within these various contexts in terms of funerary practices, age distribution and…

  • The role of fire within Neolithic collective burials

Camille De Becdelièvre, Sandrine Thiol et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•2016•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 34

The use of collective graves is one of the main features of the western European Late Neolithic. A single gravesite received the successive deposition of dozens or sometimes hundreds of individuals. While cremations or even full-fired inhumation layers are often found within these funerary deposits, the actual role of fire is still poorly understood. Recently discovered within the important archaeological complex of Passy (Yonne, France), the bur…

Enamel thickness has been linked to functional aspects of masticatory biomechanics and has been demonstrated to be an evolutionary plastic trait, selectively responsive to dietary changes, wear and tooth fracture. European Late Paleolithic and Mesolithic hunter‐gatherers mainly show a flat wear pattern, while oblique molar wear has been reported as characteristic of Neolithic agriculturalists. We investigate the relationships between enamel thick…

  • European Neolithization and Ancient DNA

    Open Access•Marie‐france Deguilloux, Rachael Leahy et al.•ARTICLE•Evolutionary Anthropology Issues…•2012•Citada por: 9•Referencias: 55

Neolithic processes underlying the distribution of genetic diversity among European populations have been the subject of intense debate since the first genetic data became available. However, patterns observed in the current European gene pool are the outcome of Paleolithic and Neolithic processes, overlaid with four millennia of further developments. This observation encouraged paleogeneticists to contribute to the debate by directly comparing g…
