Metropolitan Hubs in the South
In the previous chapter we investigated the translocal networks that connect musicians from rural and provincial regions in Madagascar and Morocco with their metropolitan centres. Translocal Networking in Madagascar and Morocco
The main focus of our book is on migrant musicians whose main residence is at present in Europe. However, in this first part we start at the point of origin. More specifically, in this chapter we begin with the artists from the provinces, who live in or come from some of the rural regions and provincial towns of Madagascar and Morocco, and in Chapter 2 we add those in the countries’ metropolitan cities.

This article examines the role of 'Europe' in our border narratives. One of the most striking parallels across our entire data set was the absence of Europe or 'Europeanness' as a self-chosen category of identification. In contrast to other categories, European references only appeared in response to direct questions by the interviewers.
