Global Change and the World's Mountains
The history of mountain research is most fascinating. Three names for 3 centuries may give an idea of the growing knowledge about the world's mountains: Horace Bénédict de Saussure, who climbed and studied the Mont Blanc in 1787; Alexander von Humboldt, ever investigating the environment during his attempt to ascend the Chimborazo in 1802; and Carl Troll, who founded the International Geographical Union's Commission on High-altitude Geoecology in…
Mountains of the world, water towers for humanity
Mountains are important sources of freshwater for the adjacent lowlands. In view of increasingly scarce freshwater resources, this contribution should be clarified. While earlier studies focused on selected river systems in different climate zones, we attempt here a first spatially explicit, global typology of the so‐called “water towers” at the 0.5° × 0.5° resolution in order to identify critical regions where disproportionality of mountain runo…

First results from field measurements leave no doubt; the extreme warm and dry weather conditions in the summer of 2003 had a profound impact on Alpine glaciers. According to data from global glacier monitoring programs, the thickness of European Alpine glaciers decreased roughly 5 times more than the average loss per year recorded during the already exceptionally warm period 1980–2000. This makes the loss of one single year about an order of mag…

Assessing the Hydrological Significance of the World's Mountains
Mountains and highlands are often called the world's natural “water towers” because they provide essential freshwater for populations both upstream and downstream. Despite this, knowledge about the significance of mountains in the hydrological cycle is still uncertain. The present article takes a regional approach, using case studies to assess and compare the hydrological significance of mountains. Methods are developed based on the experience ga…
Remarks Delivered by Professor Bruno Messerli at the Official IYM2002 Launch
Bruno Messerli was one of the key actors responsible for the inclusion of Chapter 13 (sustainable mountain development) in Agenda 21 and is still a leading proponent of mountain issues and concerns at the international level. He was invited by FAO, the UN Task Manager for IYM2002, to submit the speech he delivered at the IYM launch as part of this contribution to MountainPlatform. Ed

Mid-Holocene Climate and Culture Change in the Atacama Desert, Northern Chile
Twenty archaeological campsites intercalated between more than 30 debris flows caused by heavy rainfall events between 6200 and 3100 14 C yr B.P. have recently been discovered at Quebrada Puripica in the Atacama Desert of northern Chile. This record provides detailed information about extreme, short-lived climatic events during the hyperarid mid-Holocene period. For the first time, we found evidence of continuous human occupation in this area, fi…

Mid- and late-Holocene limnogeology of Laguna del Negro Francisco, northern Chile, and its palaeoclimatic implications
Lacustrine sediments from the high elevation, endorheic, saline lake Negro Francisco (27°28'S/69°14'W, 4125 m) provide a detailed mid- and late-Holocene environmental history of the Southern Chilean Altiplano. Mineralogy, chemical composition and sedimentary facies analyses of the deposits confirm the regional significance of mid-Holocene aridity between 6000 and 3800 BP. Precipitation rates were signifi cantly lower than the c. 250 mm yr -1 of t…
Holocene environmental changes in the Atacama Altiplano and paleoclimatic implications
Strengthened summer monsoon brought tropical/continental moisture as far south as 25oS during late-glacial and early Holocene times. Precipitation rates in the Altiplano of the western Andes (24oS) increased to 500 mm yr-1 compared to <200 mm yr-1 today. There is evidence of dramatically decreasing lake levels between 8 400 and about 3 000 yr B.P., and conditions drier than today were established. This arid period was interrupted by low-frequency…

Climate Change and Natural Resource Dynamics of the Atacama Altiplano during the Last 18,000 Years
Climate, Environmental Change, and Resources of the African Mountains from the Mediterranean to the Equator
During the last 20,000 years, the mountains of Africa between the Mediterranean and the equator have experienced significant climatic changes with important consequences for the vegetation and resource potential. At about 18,000 B. P. present altitudinal belts were depressed and the zonation of climate and vegetation was changed considerably. In the Holocene, higher temperatures led not only to more humid conditions but also to an uplifting of al…

Mountain Hazards Mapping in Nepal Introduction to an Applied Mountain Research Project
This paper explains the background of a project on mountain hazards mapping in Nepal which is supported by the United Nations University, Unesco, and His Majesty's Government of Nepal. Three areas, representative of the three main altitudinal belts experiencing major human impacts, were selected for production of prototype hazard maps. They are: 1) High- Altitude belt above and below upper timberline (Khumbu Himal); 2) Middle Mountain belt (vicin…
