Bayesian estimation of climate sensitivity using observationally constrained simple climate models
One‐dimensional simple climate models ( SCMs ) play an important role within a hierarchy of climate models. They have largely been used to investigate alternative emission scenarios and estimate global‐mean temperature change. This role has expanded through the incorporation of techniques that include Monte Carlo methods and Bayesian statistics, adding the ability to generate probabilistic temperature change projections and diagnose key uncertain…
Fit Fans
Fit Fans was a men’s health promotion intervention delivered within an English Premier League Football Club (2010–2011), which aimed to support the local community dwelling older men in lifestyle promotion (physical activity [PA], diet and well-being). The purpose of this study was to provide a reflexive account of a practitioner and the needs of participants. Seven men (mean age 58 years) attended weekly PA and lifestyle sessions over an eight-m…
Adaptation and risk management
Adaptation assessment methods are compatible with the international risk management standard ISO:31000. Risk management approaches are increasingly being recommended for adaptation assessments at both national and local levels. Two orientations to assessments can commonly be identified: top‐down and bottom‐up, and prescriptive and diagnostic. Combinations of these orientations favor different types of assessments. The choice of orientation can be…
Ethnicity and attitudes to deceased kidney donation
Community attitudes in Barbados are favourable to deceased donation based on a system of informed consent. Comparison with south London data supports the hypothesis that the relatively high prevalence of negative attitudes to deceased donation among disadvantaged ethnic minorities in high income countries may reflect feelings of marginalization and lack of belonging
Attitudes to kidney donation among primary care patients in rural Crete, Greece
Lack of knowledge and information regarding organ donation and negative attitudes related to registration as donors were the main findings of this study. Efforts should be based on targeting the attitudes to organ donation of individuals and population groups

Life at the Arcade
Life at the Arcade Roger Jones (bio) Ivory balls skitter all directions. The smoke floats low under a green light-shade brooding down on green felt. Two boys circle the table, take turns sending errant shots whumping off cushions on the table sides. A jukebox across the room bumps the air with palpable rhythm. Neon beer signs across the room spelling out icy rumors. They’re all blown about here like refuse pinned to a fence wire, their future pla…

Screening Climatic and Non-Climatic Risks to Australian Catchments
Emerging and future climatic change across the Australian continent has been identified as a significant threat to the successful sustainable management of the nation's water resources. However, the impacts of climate change must be viewed within the context of past, present and future climatic variability and human agency. A qualitative screening-level risk assessment was undertaken for Australia's 325 surface water management areas by aggregati…

Vulnerability to Climate Variability and Change in East Timor
This paper presents the results of a preliminary study of climate vulnerability in East Timor. It shows the results of projections of climate change in East Timor. The country's climate may become hotter, drier, and increasingly variable. Sea levels are likely to rise. The paper then considers the implications of these changes on three natural resources--water, soils, and the coastal zone--and finds all to be sensitive to changes in climate and s…
Survey of West Australian anxiety support group participants' views on treatment processes and outomes
Members of an anxiety disorders self-help group were surveyed to provide a better understanding of the members of these organisations in Australia and thereby assist psychologists providing for their needs. Thirty-four members of the West Australian Anxiety Self-Help Association (ASHA) completed an open-ended survey asking about the type of professionals from which help was sought, the length of time before a diagnosis was made, the type of treat…

Issues and trends in textbook publishing
A group of publishers with international experience of producing geography textbooks outline their views on this particular form of educational resource. Among the issues discussed are the role of textbooks, methods of production, international differences in courses and readership, impact of current changes within the discipline and the higher education system, and emerging technologies that might lead to alternatives to textbooks in the near fu…
Realism About What
Preanalytically, we are all scientific realists. But both philosophers and scientists become uncomfortable when forced into analysis. In the case of scientists, this discomfort often arises from practical difficulties in setting out a carefully described set of objects which adequately account for the phenomena with which they are concerned. This paper offers a set of representative examples of these difficulties for contemporary physicists. Thes…

Developments in Government Manpower
A NY EXAMINATON of what has happened in recent years to government manpower has to start with the Government Employees Training Act of 1958. Signed by the President on July 7, 1958, that Act became a benchmark of indisputable validity almost at once. In spirit and philosophy, it has provided a point of departure for significant manpower developments of several kinds, and they are not so unrelated as they may seem. Of course, everything did not fa…
