This article provides a quantitative indication of the enormous scale of French military recruitment in West Africa, focussing on the widespread pattern of migration which this recruitment produced. Late nineteenth-century military technology in Upper Volta
Military organization and technology have been important factors in the history of Upper Volta. The innovation of the horse in the fifteenth century as an instrument of war played an important part in the establishment of the Mossi states, formed as they were by conquering cavalry from Mamprusi. In the late nineteenth century, the new innovation of firearms threatened to contribute to equally significant political change in the region

One of the most persuasive elements in the history of the Western Sudan in the nineteenth century is the emergence of Muslim empire-builders. Initially, the most successful of these men were Fulbe theocrats.
