  • Problems of the Labour Theory of Value, Money, and the State Form

  • Cryptocurrency

    Open Access•Bill Dunn•ARTICLE•Forum for Social Economics•2024•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 12

The article presents an original critique of cryptocurrencies, contesting claims made by the originators and many supporters of cryptocurrencies that they are future and that future is liberating, and contesting arguments made by opponents which downplay cryptocurrencies' significance. While unlikely to simply replace the existing money of leading states, cryptocurrencies are likely to become enduringly important within complex monetary hierarchi…

  • Stabilizing A Keynes-Minsky Model of Financial Fragility

    Open Access•Bill Dunn•ARTICLE•Science & Society•2023•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 4

The profound insights provided by Minsky's theory of financial instability are insufficient. On the one hand, as Marxists and other critics have pointed out, they tend to dissociate finance from the instability-creating dynamics of the wider economy. On the other hand, they tend to depict the state as an exogenous, stabilizing, influence. This creates an inherent tension in Minsky's analysis, which also insists, “stability is destabilizing.” A Ma…

  • Keynes and Marx

    Bill Dunn•BOOK•Keynes and Marx•2021

This book sees Keynes as neither villain nor hero and develops a sympathetic 'left' critique. Keynes was an avowedly elitist and pro-capitalist economist, whom the left should appropriate with caution. But his analysis provides insights at a level of concreteness which Marx's analysis largely ignored and which were concerned with issues of the modern world which Marx could not have foreseen. A critical Marxist engagement can simultaneously increa…

  • On the Prospects of a Return to Keynes

    Bill Dunn•ARTICLE•Global Society•2018

This article addresses the prospects of a “return to Keynes” in terms of Keynes's own philosophy. It shows that Keynes's moral and political philosophy provide little guide to how Keynesian economics might now be achieved. Keynes's gradualist reformism, derived from both Burke and Moore, leaves a gulf between his economic agenda and the means of its implementation, which is widened in attempts to transpose his proposals onto the global political …

  • Class, Capital and the Global Unfree Market

    Open Access•Bill Dunn•ARTICLE•Science & Society•2017•Referencias: 7

The theories of Unequal Exchange and Monopoly Capital raise important questions about how powerful states and firms might be able to monopolize profits and both ideas continue to be invoked as telling criticisms of mainstream complacency and faith in free markets. Inter-state and inter-firm relations are often, even usually, unequal. However, the theories make unsatisfactory claims to identify decisive motors of the global economy, and fail to ca…

  • Against neoliberalism as a concept

    Open Access•Bill Dunn•ARTICLE•Capital & Class•2017•Citada por: 24•Referencias: 49

Neoliberalism is a slippery concept, neither intellectually precise nor political useful. It is used so widely, to mean such different things, that it becomes almost impossibly vague, while dissimilar international experiences of social change undermine the sweeping designation provided by most presentations of neoliberalism. The term is too often used as a catch-all category or as a category that catches selectively whatever a particular author …

  • The Political Economy of Global Capitalism and Crisis

    Bill Dunn•BOOK•Political Economy of Global…•2014

The book provides a theoretically and historically informed analysis of the global economic crisis. It makes original contributions to theories of value, of crisis and of the state and uses these to develop a rich empirical study of the changing character of capitalism in the twentieth century and beyond. It defends, uses and develops Marxist theory while arguing particularly against jumping too quickly from abstract concepts to a concrete unders…

  • Marx's method and the global crisis

    Bill Dunn•ARTICLE•International Critical Thought•2012•Referencias: 19

In the introduction to the Grundrisse, Marx describes a method of political economy involving an ‘obvious’ ordering of analysis. This has seldom been followed. This paper argues that doing so has the potential to deepen understandings of the post-2007 economic crisis. Presenting an analysis of the crisis in terms of a progressive movement from the abstract and general to the concrete and specific can avoid an empiricist eclecticism while challeng…

  • Skills, credentials and their unequal reward in a heterogeneous global political economy

    Open Access•Bill Dunn•ARTICLE•Journal of Sociology•2012•Referencias: 5

The article further investigates the relationship between returns to education and trade openness in developed and developing countries. It contests Babones’ interpretation of the divergent experiences in terms of the greater credentialism associated with education in poorer countries. It identifies an alternative explanation based on classical trade theory which is at least as convincing. However, it further argues that the heterogeneity of labo…

  • Marxist Crisis Theory and the Need to Explain Both Sides of Capitalism's Cyclicity

    Open Access•Bill Dunn•ARTICLE•Rethinking Marxism•2011•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 8

Marxism's insistence on the inherently contradictory nature of capitalism remains an enduring strength compared with orthodox accounts, which are unable to explain recurrent crises. However, no less inherent to capitalism is the transformation of slumps into booms, and Marx saw crises as momentary and forcible solutions to capitalism's contradictions. Despite this, extensive Marxist controversies have concentrated on how capitalism enters rather …

  • Capital Mobility and the Embeddedness of Labour

    Bill Dunn•ARTICLE•Global Society•2004•Citada por: 2

The paper discusses claims that radical restructuring of capitalism in the late 20th century fundamentally changed class relations. It challenges abstract presentations of space and time transformation, in particular contesting the logic of generalised, asocial concepts of spatial compression. Changes in capital mobility are dynamic and contradictory processes and spatial and temporal transformations are experienced inherently unevenly. Movements…
