Preparing for a Career at the Intersection of Geography and Computing
The growth of the geospatial services industry is increasing the demand for a workforce with training at the intersection of geography and computing (i.e., geocomputation) in terms of skills, knowledge, and disciplinary background. To be more effective at increasing the supply of geocomputational professionals, we need to better understand the existing educational pathways that are available to acquire knowledge and skills in geography, computing…
“Asked if I have experienced homophobia, I’ll say no. What I mean by that is I have not had my head kicked in”
As Covid-19 restrictions eased in 2021, a wave of LGBT + hate crime was reported in the media across local regions in the United Kingdom (UK). Although recorded hate crimes are increasing, as few as one in ten victims report instances of victimisation. Whilst decision-making processes and models of reporting helping to understand the reasons for under-reporting of hate crimes have been explored, there is a lack of UK-based research into the LGBT …
Building Educational Capacity for Inclusive Geocomputation
To build educational capacity for the rapidly evolving science and profession of geocomputation, the American Association of Geographers piloted an Encoding Geography research-practice partnership (RPP) composed of geography and computer science educators and researchers. This commentary describes the process, known as Collective Impact, that was implemented to investigate the persistent problems of practice that have limited the participation of…

Influence of Community-Level Cultural Beliefs about Autism on Families' and Professionals' Care for Children
This qualitative study aimed to understand how community-level cultural beliefs affect families' and professionals' care for children with autism and developmental delays in immigrant communities, as a first step towards promoting early identification and access to early intervention services. The study was part of the larger New York City (NYC) Korean Community Autism Project, which was designed to identify strategies to increase awareness of au…
Waste not, want not? Evaluating the urban sustainability implications of centralized versus decentralized wastewater treatment in Tijuana, Mexico
Rapid, unregulated urbanization in Tijuana, Mexico outpaces the city’s wastewater treatment capacity. Efforts to incorporate water reclamation and resource recovery technologies into the city’s treatment network present an opportunity to improve regional public and environmental health without relying solely on the region’s limited water resources. I compare two sustainable wastewater treatment technologies used in Tijuana to better understand th…
Too much, too soon? Children, ‘sexualization’ and consumer culture
This article presents a critical analysis of how the issue of childhood ‘sexualization’ – and the role of consumer culture within it – has been defined and framed, both within the public debate and in the academic research literature. It counterposes this with some evidence taken from a study conducted in Scotland in 2009/10 about the availability and nature of ‘sexualized’ goods, and the perspectives of parents and children. The article suggests…
Branding and Bricolage
The analysis presented here focuses on the relationship between femininity, transition and consumer culture. It explores the relationship between gender and consumer culture in the context of a discussion of the transition from childhood to teenage status for a group of young girls, and seeks to make a critical contribution to contemporary debates on childhood and consumer culture by reflecting on the commercial context of this transition. In doi…
Nothing to be had ‘off the peg’
Contemporary sociology makes the case that the concepts of society and social structure are past their sell-by dates. Our world is marked by impermanence and social life is characterised by mobilities. Even self-identity has become liquid. Social actors use consumption artefacts and services to re-design themselves in ways that are commensurate with their deepest desires. However, we argue that disabled people are unlikely to recognise themselves…
Thank Heaven for Little Girls
This paper is based on a critical analysis of a chain of retail outlets called 'Girl Heaven', aimed primarily at 3-13-year-old girls, described variously as 'a piece of retail folklore' (Lumsden, 1999) and as 'Guardian Wimmin Hell' (Kettle, 1999). It argues that while on the one hand Girl Heaven appears to provide a celebratory social space in which girls can affirm their femininity, it also seems to epitomize the commercial appropriation of chil…
