  • A Form of Reparation

    Angelina Snodgrass Godoy•ARTICLE•Radical History Review•2023•Referencias: 16

This article shares insights from participatory research conducted with former political prisoners, all of whom survived torture during El Salvador's armed conflict (1980-92). An analysis of declassified documents reveals that while US officials generally resisted efforts to examine abuses against guerrilla supporters, they advocated behind the scenes for international oversight of prisons, and, in doing so, helped save lives. However, former pri…

  • Of Medicines and Markets

Angelina Snodgrass Godoy•BOOK•Of Medicines and Markets•2020

Through an examination of the pharmaceutical industry and access to medicine in Central America, this book considers whether health is a human right or a commodity, and whether human rights advocacy is an antidote to the advance of neoliberal social policy or the very vehicle through which it now advances.

  • When Nunca Más is Now

  • Making meaning of violence

    Angelina Snodgrass Godoy•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Rights•2017•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 8

Human rights narratives about victimization run the risk of depoliticizing the acts of violence that created victims. In many communities in El Salvador, grassroots memory narratives have not suppressed victims' participation in the revolutionary movement before and during the country's civil war. Quite the contrary, one of the key reasons Salvadoran survivors identify for doing memory work is preserving revolutionary ideals — not to preserve the…

  • Changing Drug Markets Under New Intellectual Property Regimes

Angelina Snodgrass Godoy, Alejandro Cerón•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2011•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 2

The intellectual property rules inscribed in the Central American Free Trade Agreement have generated concern about access to medicines. We examined the implementation of the new intellectual property regime by tracking the policies and practices in place across 4 Central American countries. Although all 4 were responding to the same requirements under the agreement, their implementation of intellectual property rules differed. Not only were inst…

  • A Tale of Two Cities

    Open Access•Katherine Beckett, Angelina Snodgrass Godoy et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•2010•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 24

In the 1990s, city officials made a concerted effort to enhance security and civility in two large cities long associated with fear and danger: New York City and Bogotá, Colombia. In this article, a comparison is made of how ‘quality of life’ and ‘civility’ were conceptualised and pursued in New York City and Bogotá in the 1990s. The findings suggest that there were some similarities in the conceptualisation and operationalisation of these ideals…

  • Indigenous Rights, Resistance, and the Law

Open Access•Amanda M Fulmer, Angelina Snodgrass Godoy et al.•ARTICLE•Latin American Politics and Society•2008•Citada por: 16•Referencias: 17

Using a case study of a controversial mine in an indigenous area of Guatemala, this article explores the transnational dynamics of development and regulation of large-scale extractive industry projects in the developing world. It examines the roles played in the Marlin mine dispute by national law, international law, international financial institutions, and corporate social responsibility. It concludes that these legal regimes have a role in pro…

  • Popular Injustice

    Angelina Snodgrass Godoy•BOOK•Popular Injustice•2006

Popular Injustice focuses on the spread of highly punitive forms of social control (known locally as mano dura) in contemporary Latin America. Many people have not only called for harsher punishments, such as longer prison sentences and the reintroduction of capital punishment, but also support vigilante practices like lynchings. In Guatemala, hundreds of these mob killings have occurred since the end of the country's armed conflict in 1996. Draw…

  • Converging on the Poles

    Open Access•Angelina Snodgrass Godoy•ARTICLE•Law & Social Inquiry•2005

In this article I place U.S. punishment trends in comparative context, seeking to show that the contemporary penal regime in the United States resembles patterns of governance prevalent throughout Latin America, the world's most economically unequal region. In both the U.S. and Latin America, I argue, neoliberal reforms have produced societies characterized by ever greater divides between the haves and have-nots, and state criminal justice instit…

  • Our Right is the Right to Be Killed

    Open Access•Angelina Snodgrass Godoy•ARTICLE•Childhood•1999•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 30

This study seeks to understand the ways in which street children in Guatemala City are empowered or disempowered to defend their basic rights, on the street and in the courts. Through in-depth interviews with youths living on the street and those who work with them, I look closely at the process by which street children decide to file denuncias - to take the first step in opening a legal case to seek justice for abuses suffered. I argue that the …
