  • Conservative Government, British Decline and Japanese Success, 1979–1990

    Kenneth D Brown•ARTICLE•Contemporary British History•2011•Referencias: 7

It is well established that the policies adopted by Conservative governments led by Margaret Thatcher were strongly influenced by ideas of long-term national decline, with the work of Martin Wiener and Corelli Barnet often used to provide an historical rationale for change. What has not been much explored, however, is the way that Conservative policy was also often based on a complementary rationale based on the experience of contemporary Japan. …

  • The British Toy Business

Marius Kwint, Kenneth D Brown•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•1998

At its height British toymaking was a significant industry, with famous names such as Britains and Meccano known throughout the world. While in essence a specialized form of small-scale engineering, its products and market have always been unique, reflecting the current priorities of both parents and children. This work provides an example of the development of a specific industry over a period of 300 years. Many early toys were homemade. From th…

'Those who were originally called radicals and afterwards reformers, are called Chartists', declared Thomas Duncombe before Parliament in 1842, a comment which can be adapted for a later period and as a description of this collection of papers: 'those who were originally called Chartists were afterwards called Liberal and Labour activists'. In other words, the central argument of this book is that there was a substantial continuity in popular rad…

One of the most notable achievements of the econometric historians has been the establishment of a new orthodoxy regarding the performance of late Victorian and Edwardian entrepreneurs. What was once dismissed by an earlier generation of scholars as an abysmal record, attributed by H.G. Wells to the doubly malign influences of Oxford University and the Church of England, has now been firmly enumerated away.' At the level of the individual firm ma…

    Open Access•Kenneth D Brown•ARTICLE•The Journal of Ecclesiastical…•1987

Nonconformity was one of the major formative influences on Victorian society in Britain. The census of 1851 revealed that of seven million worshippers attending service on census day roughly half were counted in a nonconformist chapel. Even the Victorian who failed to attend service regularly found it difficult to evade the influence of nonconformity — and the Evangelicalism with which it was most closely —identified — in a society whose very cus…

    Open Access•Kenneth D Brown•ARTICLE•Church History•1987•Referencias: 1

As befits its importance in the nineteenth century, British nonconformity has attracted a lot of attention from scholars. Eminent personalities and denominational development or doctrine tend to dominate the earlier writing, while another long-established genre which is still producing fruitful work has been the analysis of the impact of nonconformity in society at large, for example in national or local politics, trade unionism, and education

History has judged John Burns's tenure of the Local Government Board between 1905 and 1914 to have been almost totally barren because his officials were able to capitalize on his great personal vanity in order to flatter him into incompetence and reaction. This article attempts a re-assessment of Burns's presidency along four lines. First it seeks to suggest that his achievement, while by no means impressive, was perhaps more substantial, particu…

During the eighteen months which immediately preceded the general election of 1906 many workers in Britain were adversely affected by the generally stagnant state of the economy and there was a considerable amount of agitation on behalf of the unemployed, particularly in 1905. Nevertheless, the economy began to improve in November of that year and unemployment as such did not play a very important part in the election, although the Labour candida…

The controversy over the respective merits of free trade and protection was an old one in 1903 when Joseph Chamberlain launched his campaign for tariff reform which became a dominant theme of Edwardian polities. Workingmen, with the exception of those in the Conservative workingmen's clubs and the National Free Labour Association, had not generally been very receptive to the ideas of fiscal reform mooted in the last years of Victoria's reign.
