    Open Access•Michael Ferber•BOOK•Dictionary of Literary Symbols•2017

This is an expansion of the first dictionary of symbols to be based on literature, rather than on 'universal' psychological archetypes or myths. • Critical Realism and Emergence in a Scaled Geography of Religion

Michael Ferber, Michael P Ferber et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Critical Realism•2013

Scale is a contested concept in human geography fostering debates and contestation that have escalated to the point where some have argued for the term to be expunged from the geographical lexicon. Yet, despite the importance of scale in the geography of religion, the scalar debates in human geography have only rarely penetrated the conceptual base of the sub-discipline. This article addresses the scale debate through a case study of adherents in…

  • Peng’s Proposal for Special Religious Zones in China

    Open Access•Michael Ferber, Michael P Ferber•ARTICLE•Sociology and Anthropology•2013•Referencias: 5

This article discusses the potential of special religious zones to enhance social harmony in China and serve as ‘useful opium’. Liu Peng has suggested that special religious zones could be created in the same way that special economic zones helped to open China to free economic markets. These special religious zones would encompass a geographical region in which the country's typical or national laws would be modified as a type of social experime…

  • Romanticism: A Very Short Introduction

    Michael Ferber•BOOK•Romanticism•2010•Citada por: 8

Romanticism: A Very Short Introduction explores the definition of the word 'Romantic' and considers its origins. What is Romanticism? Who were the Romantics? and What did they have in common? The ideas, beliefs, commitments and tastes of the Romantics are explored. The birth and growth of Romanticism throughout Europe and the Americas is described, and the various expressions of Romanticism in literature, music, painting, religion, and philosophy…

  • The Eagles of Romanticism

    Open Access•Michael Ferber•ARTICLE•Literature Compass•2006

In English, German, French, and Russian poetry of 1750 to 1850 the eagle surpasses the nightingale and the lark as a symbol of the poet, the poetic genius, or the creative imagination. They flock so thickly in that period, and were seen so seldom before and after, that they can be taken as definitive of Romanticism. Pindar likened himself to an eagle, but the modern trend gets its main boost, it seems, from Gray, who calls Pindar “the Theban eagl…

  • Critical Realism and Religion: Objectivity and the Insider/Outsider Problem

    Michael Ferber, Michael P Ferber•ARTICLE•Annals of the Association of…•2006•Citada por: 8•Referencias: 14

This article uses the insider/outsider problem in the study of religion and a critical realist interpretation of objectivity to discuss two dialectics present in geography of religion literature: geography of religion versus religious geography, and politics versus poetics. Recent developments in critical realism include a “spiritual turn” in which critical realism as both a metaphilosophy and a method is applied to religious thought. A critical …

  • "London" and Its Politics

    Michael Ferber•ARTICLE•ELH•1981

If you cross the Thames on Westminister Bridge from Parliament to the south bank, go down the stairs on the left side, and walk a hundred yards or so you will come upon the text of Blake's great short poem chiseled into the stone pavement. It is a good place to read the poem, in sight of the chartered Thames it speaks of and not far from Blake's home in Lambeth where he wrote it, though if I had been asked I would have suggested a wall near the T…
