Sampling by Ethnic Surnames
It is often difficult and costly to locate members of numerically small minorities using standard probability sampling. The Non-Linear Impact of Schooling
This study assesses the impact of different types and amounts of Jewish schooling in producing adult religiosity, using a sample from the Chicago area and an analysis of covariance design. The type of supplementary Jewish education received by over 80 per cent of those Jews who have received any form of Jewish education does not have much lasting impact on their adult religiosity, probably because they do not attend school for long enough. Ethnic Identification among American Jews
What is a Jew? Who is a Jew? have long been important sociological questions. The authors, in addressing these issues, focus on the individual's interpersonal relationships during the socialization process and their personal integration in a social and organizational context. They assert that Jewish education, positive Jewish experiences with parents and peers during adolescence and ongoing involvement with other Jews is necessary and important f…
The Interaction Effects of Parents, Spouse and Schooling
This paper discusses the literature on the long-range impact of schooling and the types of effects that schools have shown. It compares data on the impact of Jewish schooling on adult religiosity with similar data from a study of Catholic schooling. Like previous studies on other types of schools, the main effect of Jewish schooling seems to be an accentuation of parental influences. This effect is diminished substantially if not supported by mar…
