  • R&D Alliances and Open Innovation

Hans T W Frankort, John Hagedoorn•CHAPTER•Oxford Handbook of Open Innovation•2024

This chapter takes stock of the empirical literature on research and development (R&D) alliances, one among several open innovation (OI) practices, and identifies opportunities to bring the traditions of research on R&D alliances and OI into closer alignment. Through a structured literature review, a wealth of research is revealed on the antecedents and consequences of R&D alliances and their characteristics, and almost half the sampled articles …

  • Social innovation, goal orientation, and openness

Open Access•John Hagedoorn, Helene Haugh et al.•ARTICLE•Small Business Economics•2023

We empirically examine social innovation and openness through a survey of social enterprise hybrids in the United Kingdom (UK). Social innovation refers to new products, processes, and services that respond to grand challenges. Social enterprises pursue economic, social, and environmental goals but vary in their goal orientation, namely the relative importance ascribed to such goals. We first explore the relationships between commercial, social, …

  • The nascent ecology of social enterprise

Open Access•Helene Haugh, Paul Robson et al.•ARTICLE•Small Business Economics•2022

Employing population ecology theory, we examine social enterprise population emergence in the UK after 2005 when a new organizational form for social enterprise was established. Our density dependence analysis of nearly seven thousand community interest companies finds that survival is positively influenced by age and population densities of both other social enterprises and commercial organizations. Two specific patterns in population emergence …

  • Inter-firm R&D networks in the global software industry

Myriam Cloodt, John Hagedoorn et al.•ARTICLE•Business History•2010•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 35

This paper presents an analysis of some major historical trends in inter-firm R&D partnering in the international software industry during the period 1970–1999. Our research demonstrates an overall growth pattern of newly made R&D partnerships and reveals the important role played by leading firms. We also examine the emergence of various R&D networks in the software industry, indicating the change from sparse and disconnected inter-firm R&D netw…

  • Trends and Patterns in Interfirm R&D Networks in the Global Computer Industry

Open Access•Myriam Cloodt, John Hagedoorn et al.•ARTICLE•The Business History Review•2006•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 37

In the early 1970s, a few computer companies began to form partnerships with other firms in the international computer industry for the purpose of sharing research and development (R&D) resources. This trend did not take hold in a meaningful way until the beginning of the 1980s. Our study focuses on this particular sector because it represents a major industry in which interfirm R&D partnering occurs

  • Measuring innovative performance

    Open Access•John Hagedoorn, Myriam Cloodt•ARTICLE•Research Policy•2003

The innovative performance of companies has been studied quite extensively and for a long period of time. However, the results of many studies have not yet led to a generally accepted indicator of innovative performance or a common set of indicators. So far the variety in terms of constructs, measurements, samples, industries and countries has been substantial. This paper studies the innovative performance of a large international sample of nearl…

  • Understanding the rationale of strategic technology partnering

    Open Access•John Hagedoorn•ARTICLE•Strategic Management Journal•1993

Interfirm strategic alliances appear to have become more important as a part of (international) business. In this contribution an attempt is made to clarify our understanding of the motives that lead firms to cooperate in their innovative efforts. Going beyond general theoretical statements and case studies, attention is paid to both sectoral differences in the motivation for partnerships as well as to contrasts in interorganizational features of…

  • Embedded Patterns of International Alliance Formation

    Open Access•Richard N Osborn, John Hagedoorn et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Sociologica•1959

Using a combination of instutitional, systems contingency and ecological theory. this paper argues and empirically demonstrates that key founding characteristics of international alliances are embedded (interactively related) in one another. Specifically, the technical area of the alliance activity, the intended direction of product/knowledge flows among sponsors, and the administrative form of the alliances are shown to be interactively related.…
