  • Introduction: The Lives of Cold War Afro-Asianism

Open Access•Su Lin Lewis, Carolien Stolte•OTHER•The Lives of Cold War Afro-Asianism•2022

The Afro-Asianism of the early Cold War can be conceptualised as a living network, nourished by connections created through political activism at both the local and the international level. The “lives” in The Lives of Cold War Afro-Asianism refer both to the many different incarnations of Afro-Asianism itself, and to the lives of the women and men who lived Afro-Asianism through their politics, their travels, and their relationships. Afro-Asianis…

  • Technologies of Emergency: Cyprus at the Intersection of Decolonisation and the Cold War

    Open Access•Maria Chatzicharalampous, Carolien Stolte•ARTICLE•Contemporary European History•2022•Referencias: 5

This article analyses ‘technologies of emergency’ in colonial counterinsurgency campaigns, framed around the case of Cyprus. In the 1950s, the repeated use of the state of emergency created a continuum, connecting British colonies on three different continents in a single administrative network. Lessons learned in one location were applied in the next, causing the state of emergency to evolve into a blueprint for post-war counterinsurgency in col…

The League Against Imperialism: Lives and Afterlives explores the dramatic and engaging story of a global institution that brought together activists across geographical and political borders for the goal of eradicating colonial rule worldwide. The League against Imperialism (LAI) attracted anticolonial activists like India’s Jawaharlal Nehru, Indonesia’s Sukarno, and Kenya’s Jomo Kenyatta, as well as prominent figures such as Albert Einstein, Er…

Bandung was once a colonial resort town, nestled in the mountainous tea plantations of West Java, and gained notoriety during the Indonesian Revolution, when Indonesians burned down part of their own town in response to the Dutch reoccupation of the city. • Sites of Asian Interaction: Ideas, Networks and Mobility

    Open Access•T N Harper, Jacqueline H Fewkes et al.•BOOK•Sites of Asian Interaction•2014

A focus on the sites of Asian interaction enables this volume to shed new light on the growing field of diaspora studies. Research on Asia's many diasporas has enriched the older literature on migration to illuminate the links of kinship, affect, trade, and information that connect locations across Asia, and beyond. But where many recent works on particular diasporas have tended to look inwards - at how distinctive diasporic cultures maintained a…

  • Trade Unions on Trial

    Carolien Stolte•ARTICLE•Comparative Studies of South Asia…•2013•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 8

The Indian trade union movement of the interwar years was marked by an increasing tension between reformist and revolutionary methods. The two factions shared an internationalist idiom and internationalist aspirations, but their visions of the postimperialist world order were crucially different. The reformists advocated inclusion of India’s labour leaders in the international system, whereas the revolutionaries sought to harness international wo…

    Open Access•Carolien Stolte•ARTICLE•Journal of Global History•2012•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 6

This article considers Asianism in the Indian trade union movement, against the backdrop of increasing international cooperation between Asian trade union movements in the interwar period, which culminated in the short-lived Asiatic Labour Congress (1934–37). It demonstrates how Asianist enthusiasm both propelled and hampered Indian workers’ representation at the International Labour Organization and other international bodies. Finally, it consid…

    Open Access•Carolien Stolte•ARTICLE•Modern Asian Studies•2012•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 10

This paper traces a set of interlinked Asianist networks through the activities of Mahendra Pratap, an Indian revolutionary exile who spent the majority of his life at various key anti-imperialist sites in Asia. Pratap envisioned a unified Asia free from colonial powers, but should be regarded as an anti-imperialist first and a nationalist second-he was convinced that India's independence would materialize naturally as a by-product of a federated…

    Open Access•Carolien Stolte, Harald Fischer-Tiné•ARTICLE•Comparative Studies in Society…•2012•Citada por: 6•Referencias: 47

Asianisms, that is, discourses and ideologies claiming that Asia can be defined and understood as a homogenous space with shared and clearly defined characteristics, have become the subject of increased scholarly attention over the last two decades. The focal points of interest, however, are generally East Asian varieties of regionalism. That 'the cult of Asianism' has played an important role on the Indian subcontinent, too-as is evident from th…

After Itinerario was founded by George Winius and you in 1976, you yourself did many of the interviews. Interviews were and still are rather uncommon in scholarly journals. Why did you start them? It was a mixture of egoism and curiosity. We meant the journal to be a research journal, so apart from publishing…
