  • Local History as Global Design

Jonathan Davies•CHAPTER•The Oxford Handbook of Universal…•2025

This chapter considers Josephus’ sprawling Jewish Antiquities as a specimen of universal history. A brief introduction establishes the basic elements of the text. The chapter then considers Josephus’ navigation of the distinction between ‘myth’ and ‘history’, a common issue among ancient universal historians, arguing that Josephus elides that distinction by simultaneously ‘historicising’ the spatium mythicum and ‘mythicizing’ the spatium historic…

  • A Very Stable Genius

Open Access•Jonathan Davies, Jonathan Ceredig Davies•ARTICLE•Histos•2025

ver the years, Flavius Josephus has had to endure more than his fair share of hostile moralising scholarship.Among the many grave defects which such scholarship has attributed to this author, the charge of vanity is prominent, alongside accusations of cowardice, sycophancy, and opportunism. 1 The perception of vanity derives, above all, from the fact that Josephus is one of the most autobiographically inclined of all the ancient historical writer…

  • Representing the Dynasty in Flavian Rome

    Jonathan Davies•BOOK•Representing the Dynasty in…•2023•Referencias: 96

This monograph investigates the problem of contemporary historiography and regime representation in Flavian Rome through a close study of a text not usually read for such purposes but which has obvious promise for a study of this theme, the Jewish War of Flavius Josephus. Having surveyed the evolution of our conception of Josephus’ relationship to Flavian power, taken a broad account of issues of political expression and regime representation in …

  • Brexit and invasive species

    J S Davies, Jonathan Davies•ARTICLE•Cultural Studies•2021

The article addresses the issue of invasive non-native species in Britain and its proximate cultural and political implications. Notably, it charts the co-option of this issue by sections of the nationalist press since the escalation of the European migrant crisis in 2015 and their strategic metaphorical alignment of human and extra-human migration, particularly in the period surrounding the Brexit referendum. These reports serve as the basis for…

Situated in the context of current examinations of inequality and underrepresentation in music education in the United Kingdom, this article offers perspectives on a community music school and outreach initiative based in Southwark, London, where King’s College London music students, mentored by an experienced local teacher, facilitate small group music-making for primary school children who would not otherwise have opportunities for collaborativ…

  • Development Process Resilience and Sustainable Development

    Jon Davies, Jonathan Davies et al.•ARTICLE•Society & Natural Resources•2015•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 14

Recently, the development and humanitarian relief communities have directed attention to building resilience of pastoral communities to droughts and other shocks. While resilience thinking has much to offer, using resilience as a framework for investing in disaster risk reduction and development faces numerous challenges. Development implies that people are actively changing, which poses the question of whether such changes are adaptations or tra…

  • Rethinking urban power and the local state

    Open Access•J S Davies, Jonathan Davies•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•2014•Citada por: 16•Referencias: 51

Foucauldian and neo-Gramscian approaches enjoy considerable influence in research on the mutations of neoliberal governance in cities. However, both are prone to treating coercion as the antithesis of power, leading them to downplay the coercive modalities of neoliberalism. This paper applies the Gramscian theory of the integral state to correct the bias towards non-coercive power. The integral state rejects the power–violence dualism, depicting …

  • Violence and I talian universities during the R enaissance

Historians have recently begun to explore premodern academic violence and this study is the first survey of violence at Italian universities between the fifteenth and the seventeenth centuries. It seeks to address a series of questions. How frequent was violence? What forms did it take? What motivated it? What were the responses of the authorities? Examining these issues increases our understanding of masculinity and academic, social, and nationa…

  • A History of Florence, 1200-1575

    Jonathan Davies•ARTICLE•The English Historical Review•2010

Since the early 1950s, medieval and Renaissance Florence has been the focus of intense research by anglophone scholars attracted by the cultural, economic, and political significance of the city and by the richness of its archives and libraries. Although always sensitive to the important contribution made by Italian historians and, as we shall see, original in its own right, this book is, to an extent, a monument to much of this scholarship. • Livelihood adaptation to risk

J S Davies, Jonathan Davies et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2007

Development policies in the pastoral areas of Africa assume that pastoralists are poor. Using the Afar pastoralists of Ethiopia as the focus of research this article challenges this depiction of pastoralism by exploring pastoral livelihood goals and traditional strategies for managing risk. Investment in social institutions to minimise the risk of outright destitution, sometimes at the cost of increased poverty, and significant manipulation of lo…

Local Strategic Partnerships (LSPs) are a major recent innovation in English local governance. As the 'partnership of partnerships' in a locality, the ability of the LSP to provide an arena for community leadership and joined up service delivery is vital to the Local Government Modernisation Agenda. Drawing on material from the national evaluation of LSPs, this paper assesses their progress. A theory of change (ToC) approach was adopted in the ev…

At the same time that comparative and international political scientists have been confronting the problems of analysing state behaviour under conditions of uncertainty, state‐centred political scientists are attempting, somewhat belatedly, to deal with the increasing complexity and uncertainty which underpins modern governance. Yet despite similar research agendas these disciplines have continued to speak past each other. This article contends t…

These ties dated back to at least 1451 when Ficino was a student of logic at the Studio.
