Sexual objectification in #MeToo and #WhyIDidntReport tweets
Sexual objectification affects women negatively in a many ways (e.g., increased focus on appearance and safety), especially if they are not provided the opportunity to cope effectively. Social media platforms provide an opportunity to share experiences and receive social support. We conducted sentiment and content analyses of #MeToo and #WhyIDidntReport (WIDR) tweets with a focus on descriptions of sexual objectification. Most #MeToo tweets were …
Twitter, incivility, and presidential communication
By approaching civility as an operational logic for democracy, we ask how incivility is a strategy related to power and domination, particularly from the president of the United States. We propose that Twitter is part of an infrastructure of incivility, through which structures and discursive mechanisms contribute to a devaluation of normative democratic discourses. Sharing #MeToo on Twitter
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine 2,102 #MeToo tweets and focuses on the content of the tweets and social reactions to these tweets. For a subsample of 912 tweets that included disclosures of sexual assault or harassment, the incident type and context, along with coping were also examined. Ransom as Political Strategy
Histories of ransoming in West Africa have placed it alongside a host of related practices including pawning, panyarring, kidnapping, and enslavement, and firmly within histories of long-distance slave trading. This article considers how ransom functioned outside the conventional trans-Atlantic economic frameworks within which it is often placed by scholars.
