• Doing death’ the Mediterranean way

Eva Soom Ammann, Gabriela Rauber et al.•ARTICLE•Mortality•2019

This paper presents ethnographic data on a migrant-specific nursing home ward in Switzerland. It shows that the structurally pre-defined segregation of residents sharing a common characteristic affects care practices along three dimensions: performances of sameness/otherness, informalisation of relationships and language/understanding. Yet, ‘death work’ showed little difference to non-segregated wards. However, relatives’ practices in dying traje…

  • The Art of Enduring Contradictory Goals

Eva Soom Ammann, Corina Salis Gro et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Intercultural Studies•2016•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 15

This paper focuses on the normative notion of ‘good death’, its practical relevance as a frame of reference for ‘death work’ procedures in institutional elder care in Switzerland and the ways in which it may be challenged within migrant ‘dying trajectories’. In contemporary palliative care, the concept of ‘good death’ focuses on the ideal of an autonomous dying person, cared for under a specialised biomedical authority. Transferred to the nursing…

  • Predictors of hazardous drinking, tobacco smoking and physical inactivity in vocational school students

Open Access•Severin Haug, Michael P Schaub et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2013

Tobacco smoking, hazardous drinking and physical inactivity during adolescence are risk factors that are associated with poorer health in adulthood. The identification of subgroups of young people with a high prevalence of one or more of these risk factors allows an optimised allocation of preventive measures. This study aimed at investigating hazardous drinking, tobacco smoking and physical inactivity as well as their associations and demographi…

  • Comparison of Heroin-Assisted Treatment and Abstinence-Oriented Residential Treatment in Switzerland Based on Patient Characteristics

    Open Access•Miriam G Gerlich, Susanne Schaaf et al.•ARTICLE•Contemporary Drug Problems•2009•Referencias: 10

Patients who entered heroin-assisted treatment (HAT) (n = 220) or abstinence-oriented residential treatment (AORT) (n = 982) in Switzerland in 2005/06 were compared. Patients entering HAT were older, spent more time in prison and had more previous treatment attempts, but AORT patients had more often unsafe injections. Self-referrals were more frequent for HAT, referrals by court for AORT. Social conditions improved in both patient groups compared…
