  • Magnetostratigraphy of Hominid Fossil Bearing Formations in Sangiran and Mojokerto, Java

    Open Access•Masayuki Hyodo, Naotune Watanabe et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropological Science•1993•Citada por: 34•Referencias: 1

Paleomagnetic investigation of Plio-Pleistocene formations in Sangiran and Mojokerto, Java was carried out to date stratigraphic levels of Pithecanthropus fossils. Secular variation records of paleomagnetic field direction from the two areas show very consistent changes with some prominent features. The record for the past 3 million years obtained in Sangiran revises the magnetostratigraphy of earlier investigations and reveals stratigraphic leve…

  • University of Tokyo Radiocarbon Measurements V

Open Access•Hiromi Kobayashi, Taeko Hirose et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1974•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 6

Most of the 14 C measurements reported here were made between August 1970 and August 1972. Chemical treatment of samples and counting technique remain as described previously (R, 1968, v 10, p 144–148; 1971, v 13, p 97–102). We have added Houtermans-Oeschger type multi-anode anticoincidence gas proportional counter, manufactured by Tokyo Atomic, Japan. The central counter tube, which has several small holes, 5mm diam, is made of aluminized polyet…

  • Anthropometry on Aogashima Island, Japan

Open Access•Moriharu Eto, Kazuo Terada et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Anthropological…•1955

Aogashima island is a small volcanic island situated in the Pacific about 360 kilometres south of Tokyo. In November 1954 an anthropological survey was caned out on this island. As a result of anthropometrical measurements of 70' native adults, 40 males and 30 females, some bodily traits were revealed to be rather characteristic of Aogashima islanders. In the first place stature was so markedly short in both sexes as scarcely to be met with among…

  • On the Possible Preservation of Bone in the Fossil-bearing Formation near Akashi

    Open Access•Naotune Watanabe•ARTICLE•The Journal of Anthropological…•1950

The human coxal bone, which was discovered by N. NAORA at seacliff near Akashi in 1931, was pointed out on the primitivity of its form by Dr. K. HASEBE who proposed to name " Nipponantkropus "provided it is verified to have occorred from lower pleistocene deposit there. The bone was discovered at the earth heap which was dislocated down from upper part of the cliff and was not excavated from the original formation. In 1948 the excavation was effe…

  • The Preservation of Bony Substances in the Soil of Prehisteric Sites

    Open Access•Naotune Watanabe•ARTICLE•The Journal of Anthropological…•1950

Good amount of bony remains, human skeletons, animal bones, teeth and horns of deer including many kinds of artefacts made of them have been found from prehistoric sites in Japan. But they were mostly found in coastal shellmounds and rarely in inland refuse deposits. Two possible cases are regarded as the reason for the latter case ; (1) the absence of bony substances from prehistoric times, (2) the chemical decay of them which once existed at th…
