Soviet and US cold war borderlands
This paper discusses how geographical and ideological borders impacted anthropological practices in the East and West during the Cold War. Examples from the Baltics and Soviet Estonia and the United States are used to illustrate how national and supranational political ideologies set limits on what could be studied and also limited the forms of analysis that could be deployed by scholars during the post-war period. Cultural heritage and home are not natural givens but construed and bounded in spatial, temporal and emotional terms. This similarity suggests that diasporic movements that disrupt the spatial dimension need closer examination. A Textual Ethnography of Collaboration in Early Sámi Studies
This is an ethnographic study of collaboration for publishing textual representations of the Sámi based on ethnographic experience that reflect acquisition of agency and contingent intertextuality. The textual ethnography unravels early twentieth-century collaborative frameworks in which the investigated works were generated and their historical context. Minority Identities and the Construction of Rights in Post-Soviet Settings
This article looks at the emergent policies and legal constraints shaping identity constructions within and for minority groups in Estonia and in northwest Russia, in order to investigate the processes of 'minority-building' and emergent state policies through cultural entanglements. In the following I discuss vernacular religion as a tool for conesting and manifesting identities in Estonia. The stud takes a look at an overwhelming impact of the Soviet system of state atheism combined with constraining sociopolitical norms and oppression of cultural individuality on the religious ideology that emerged in the modern, secularised Estonian society under the Soviet rule. Ethnicity is an observable and instrumental element of cultural communication. The modern age continues to witness a growing desire for ethnic recognition in individuals and groups, a search for ethnic identity, and a conscious exhibition of distinctive ethnic traits (Degh 1978:36). The current article attempts to describe festivals and ethnic expressions occurring in that context. A festival prepares a communicative scenery for manifestations of…
