Automation trends and labor markets
From displacement to integration
We examine how the massive exodus of Venezuelans and an amnesty program aimed at their integration affected income distribution in Colombia. Using RIF regressions in an instrumental variables approach, we find that the exodus had a negative effect on the lower tail of native Colombians’ income distribution, while the amnesty program partially mitigated this impact. Our findings posit downgrading as the driving mechanism. Employment restrictions f…

Does the Minimum Wage Affect Wage Inequality? A Study for the Six Largest Latin American Economies
Minimum wage (MW) policies are widespread in the developing world and yet their effects are still unclear. In this paper we explore the effect of national MW policies in Latin America’s six largest economies by exploiting the heterogeneity in the bite of the national minimum wage across local labor markets and over time. We find evidence that the MW has a compression effect on the wage distribution of formal workers. The effect was particularly l…

Lucky women in unlucky cohorts
Tres Décadas en Diez Gráficos
This paper analyzes the development of Latin America during the last three decades by using growth incidence curves and weighted growth rates calculated on the basis of harmonized microdata from national household surveys. Over the past three decades, Latin America has made progress in most basic socioeconomic indicators. On average, growth in income and in some educational and housing variables has been more intense among the lower income strata…
Routinization and Employment
We study changes in employment by occupations characterized by different degree of exposure to routinization in the six largest Latin American economies over the last two decades. We combine our own indicators of routine task content based on information from the Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIACC) with labor market microdata from harmonized national household surveys. We find that the increase in jobs was dec…
Latin American Brotherhood? Immigration and Preferences for Redistribution
Preferences for redistribution are critical determinants of the size of the welfare state and, therefore, of the level of inequality in a country. In this paper, we explore the effect of immigration on preferences for redistribution in the context of migration in Latin America, where migrants tend to have characteristics more similar to those of natives. To this aim, we exploit provincial-level data from a large attitudinal survey and match it wi…

Community Monitoring Interventions to Curb Corruption and Increase Access and Quality in Service Delivery
There is a belief that allowing communities monitoring power over providers could be beneficial for improving service delivery and reducing corruption in service delivery. In community monitoring interventions (CMIs), the community is given the opportunity to observe and assess providers’ performance and provide feedback to providers and politicians. This systematic review and meta-analysis appraises and synthesises evidence on the effects of CMI…
Perceptions of Distributive Justice in Latin America during a Period of Falling Inequality
The transport sector offers limited \n options to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as compared with \n other sectors, such as power generation and industrial \n sectors. To understand the potential reduction of energy \n consumption and associated emissions through fuel \n substitution or transportation service demand reduction, \n this study estimates own- and cross-price elasticities of \n various fuels used for transportation. The analysis show…

The Rise and Fall of Income Inequality in Latin America
This chapter documents the pattern of the rise and fall of income inequality in Latin America and comments on some plausible explanatory factors. After an overview of the regional trends and comparisons with other regions of the world, it focuses on three countries for which substantial analysis is available: Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico. The second section is an overview of the main characteristics and patterns of Latin America's income distrib…

Labor Informality in Latin America and the Caribbean
This paper documents the main patterns and trends of alternative definitions of labor informality in Latin America and the Caribbean, by exploiting a large database of more than 100 household surveys covering the period 1989-2005. The evidence suggests that there are no signs of a consistent pattern of reduction in labor informality in the region. Regardless of the definition used, labor informality remains a pervasive characteristic of labor mar…
Capital Accumulation, Trade Liberalization, and Rising Wage Inequality
Capital accumulation can modify the relative productivity between skilled and unskilled workers, leading to changes in the wage structure. In particular, if capital goods are relatively more complementary to skilled workers, a positive correlation between investment in physical capital and the wage premium would be expected. In this article, we present evidence for this hypothesis by taking advantage of the variability in wage premia and capital …

Social Protection and the Labour Market in Latin America
Most social protection is provided through contribution‐based programmes, which means that protection is usually linked to employment conditions in the formal economy. This article describes the levels, trends and structure of social protection for workers in Latin America, highlighting the relationship between protection and employment conditions. The study is based on a selection of household surveys carried out in various countries in the regi…
