Lance Taylor (1940–2022), A Structuralist and Worldly Philosopher of Our Times
Lance Jerome Taylor was a leading thinker in development economics and heterodox macroeconomics. The US labor share of income
We propose a novel methodological approach to disentangle the main structural shocks affecting the US labor share of income. We motivate an SVAR model to derive four structural shocks: aggregate demand, labor supply, shocks to wages, and productivity; and quantify the dynamic responses of the labor share to each structural shock. Dualism and payroll shares across US states
This paper analyses US payroll share and components across states for the period 1977–2017. Findings include that spatial clustering in payroll shares decreased until the year 2000. States are clustered in low and high productivity groups. We relate this phenomenon to dualism. This paper contributes to the literature on secular stagnation by estimating a measure of potential output growth for the post-war US economy derived from a novel model specification that allows for the cyclical interactions between income distribution, represented by the trajectory of the labor share of income, and economic activity, as measured by capacity utilization. Using insights from a case study on the allocation of labor in subsistence households in Mozambique, this study develops a conceptual framework for examining linkages between time poverty and farm production. An unexpected event such as a health crisis increases the demand for labor provided by women, thus making them more time poor.
