Nutrition-sensitive agriculture programs increase dietary diversity in children under 5 years
BACKGROUND: Low-quality diets contribute to the burden of malnutrition and increase the risk of children not achieving their developmental potential. Nutrition-sensitive agriculture programs address the underlying determinants of malnutrition, though their contributions to improving diets do not factor into current nutrition impact modeling tools. OBJECTIVE: To synthesize the evidence on the effectiveness of nutrition-sensitive agriculture progra…
Effects and drivers of participation in agriculture-nutrition-health interventions
This study assessed effects and drivers of mother–child pair participation in agriculture-nutrition-health linkage projects. Data were collected from 2,271 households in Kenya. Three categories of participation regime were defined: none, partial and full participation. Bivariate analyses and multinomial-logit regression were used to assess the effects and drivers of participation, respectively. Results found higher diet quality and consumption of…
Designing programs to improve diets for maternal and child health
Improving maternal and child nutrition in resource-poor settings requires effective use of limited resources, but priority-setting is constrained by limited information about program costs and impacts, especially for interventions designed to improve diet quality. This study utilized a mixed methods approach to identify, describe and estimate the potential costs and impacts on child dietary intake of 12 nutrition-sensitive programs in Ethiopia, N…

Health and economic impact of human papillomavirus 16 and 18 vaccination of preadolescent girls and cervical cancer screening of adult women in Peru
OBJECTIVE: To estimate the benefits, cost-effectiveness (i.e., value for money), and required financial costs (e.g., affordability) of adding human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination to Peru's cervical cancer screening program. METHODS: Evidence (e.g., coverage, delivery costs) from an HPV vaccination demonstration project conducted in Peru was combined with epidemiological data in an empirically calibrated mathematical model to assess screening (H…
Health and economic impact of human papillomavirus 16 and 18 vaccination of preadolescent girls and cervical cancer screening of adult women in Peru
Preadolescent HPV vaccination, followed by enhanced HPV DNA screening in adult women, could prevent two out of three cervical cancer deaths. Several strategies would be considered "good value" for resources invested, provided vaccine prices are low. While financial costs imply substantial immediate investments, the high-value payoff should motivate creative mechanisms for financing and scale-up of delivery programs
Mothers' preferences and willingness to pay for HPV vaccines in Vinh Long Province, Vietnam
Exploring the costs and economic consequences of unsafe abortion in Mexico City before legalisation
An assessment of abortion outcomes and costs to the health care system in Mexico City was conducted in 2005 at a mix of public and private facilities prior to the legalisation of abortion. Data were obtained from hospital staff, administrative records and patients. Direct cost estimates included personnel, drugs, disposable supplies, and medical equipment for inducing abortion or treating incomplete abortions and other complications. Indirect pat…
