‘ When you hear such rumours, you get scared’
Despite widespread acceptance of the oral polio vaccine (OPV), vaccine hesitancy towards OPV in some countries presents a barrier to global eradication efforts. Between 2021 and 2022, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative implemented OPV campaigns concurrently with the roll-out of Covid-19 vaccines, for which vaccine hesitancy is well-documented. We sought to understand stakeholder perceptions of OPV and Covid-19 vaccines in Cameroon and Ethiop…
Assessing the effect of COVida orphans and vulnerable children support services on viral load coverage and suppression among children and adolescents living with HIV in four provinces in Mozambique
Orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) programs focusing on improving HIV outcomes for children and adolescents living with HIV (C&ALHIV) may improve viral load (VL) testing coverage, a critical step toward achieving VL suppression. In Mozambique, we conducted a retrospective medical record review comparing VL testing coverage and suppression between C&ALHIV receiving OVC support and two cohorts of non-participants constructed using propensity sco…
Build back the confidence”
Despite the challenges to vaccination campaigns experienced during the Covid-19 pandemic, it was anticipated that the Polio Programme would continue to experience community support for OPV with appropriate messaging and community coordination. These efforts would "build back the confidence" among caregivers and other community stakeholders regarding community-based vaccination campaigns. Social and behavior change approaches that leverage clear, …
Nutritional Content of Popular Menu Items from Online Food Delivery Applications in Bangkok, Thailand
The rise in online food delivery (OFD) applications has increased access to a myriad of ready-to-eat options, which may lead to unhealthier food choices. Our objective was to assess the nutritional profile of popular menu items available through OFD applications in Bangkok, Thailand. We selected the top 40 popular menu items from three of the most commonly used OFD applications in 2021. Each menu item was collected from the top 15 restaurants in …
The financial lives of female sex workers in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Understanding the financial context of the lives of female sex workers (FSWs) is essential to address structural drivers of HIV risk. We used a financial diary methodology to record daily financial transactions over six weeks from a stratified purposive sample (n = 34) of FSWs in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. FSWs also provided information on their experience with gender-based violence and condom use. FSWs generated 90.1% of total cash from sex work, wi…
What happens when savings groups grow up? Examining savings group sustainability and perceived long-term benefits
Using qualitative methods, this article examines savings groups that have been in operation for five to ten years in Tanzania to understand internal and external factors influencing savings group longevity and explore member perception of how long-term participation affected the well-being of their households and children. Although groups did not consistently adhere to best practices, they viewed good leadership, trust, and love as the most impor…
Exploring pathways to adherence and retention for HIV-positive savings group members in Ethiopia
Savings groups are an economic strengthening intervention used to enhance the well-being of vulnerable groups. However, it is unclear how savings groups influence treatment outcomes for people living with HIV. This article reports on a study that conducted 48 in-depth interviews with HIV-positive savings group members in Ethiopia and used their narratives to qualitatively assess pathways linking savings group participation to adherence, retention…
Realistic expectations
Orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) programs in high HIV prevalence contexts are shifting toward ‘graduation’ approaches to facilitate outcome-focused programming, but little is known about the sustainability of participant outcomes post-graduation. We conducted a qualitative follow-up study to 4Children’s quantitative tracer study of the APHIAplus IMARISHA program in Kenya examining the sustainability of graduation benchmarks nine months after…
Evaluating the effect of integrated microfinance and health interventions
BACKGROUND: Solutions delivered within firm sectoral boundaries are inadequate in achieving income security and better health for poor populations. Integrated microfinance and health interventions leverage networks of women to promote financial inclusion, build livelihoods, and safeguard against high cost illnesses. Our understanding of the effect of integrated interventions has been limited by variability in intervention, outcome, design, and me…
